Twitterrific for iOS adds facial recognition for framing...

<img title="Twitterrific for iOS adds facial recognition for framing images, quote tweet notifications, more" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-386704" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=271"alt="Twitterrific facial recognition" width="704" height="271" />

Facial recognition isn’t something you immediately consider when you think of a Twitter client, but <a href="https://itunes.apple...&at=10laZc"target="_blank">Twitterrific has added the technology in a clever way to its latest update for iOS. Using Apple’s API for picking out faces in a scene (you probably see this in action the most in the Camera app), Twitterrific now enhances rich media previews by centering images around people rather than cropping around the center. You can see a before and after comparison above showing the new feature in action.

The new feature works automatically once you upgrade to the latest version of the app and works with previews for videos as well as images.

In addition to clever facial recognition tricks, Twitterrific also now supports notifications for Twitter’s new quote tweet format. Now when someone else quotes your tweet in their own, Twitterrific can send an alert just like a mention or follow alert to let you know someone is quoting your tweet.

<img title="Twitterrific for iOS adds facial recognition for framing images, quote tweet notifications, more" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-386706" src="https://9to5mac.file...ng?w=704&h=458"alt="QuoteNotification_Thumb" width="704" height="458" />

The update also adds support for the popular swipe to go back gesture that makes using larger iPhones one-handed much easier. Twitterrific also recently added an option for moving the tab bar navigation from the top to the bottom which is handy for bigger displays.

Twitterrific 5.12.1 is a free update to existing users. New customers can try Twitterrific5 for free from the App Store while in-app purchases remove ads and add features like push notifications and tweet translation.

Filed under: Apps Tagged: facial recognition, Iconfactory, quote tweets, Twitter, Twitter apps, Twitterrific
Continue reading more about Apps, Twitter, and Twitterrific at 9to5Mac.

What do you think? Discuss "Twitterrific for iOS adds facial recognition for framing images, quote tweet notifications, more" with our community.

If your Apple Watch stops responding to your iPhone, you can reboot it or you can turn the Bluetooth connection off and on. Review: Just Mobile’s TimeStand is the $40 metal App...

Today, 07:59 PM

<img title="Review: Just Mobile's TimeStand is the $40 metal Apple Watch stand we've been waiting for" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-386732" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=655&h=328"alt="timestand-7" width="655" height="328" />

If you want an AppleWatch stand, you can choose from three major materials: plastic, wood, or metal. The universally affordable plastic options tend to look a bit cheap when paired with the Apple Watch — particularly non-Sport models — while the pricey wood ones are somewhat polarizing, sparking a roughly equal mix of “love” and “hate” responses. From what I’ve gathered from readers, metal is the most popular Apple Watch stand option, with options starting at $20 and climbing sharply; most of the best metal stands are hovering around the $60 mark. For months, I’ve felt that the sweet spot for a nice metal Apple Watch stand was right in the middle of that range, but there hasn’t been a worthy option to test the viability of the $40 price point.

That’s part of the reason JustMobile’s TimeStand ($40) feels inevitable. It was merely a matter of time until the metal masters at Just Mobile weighed in with their take on an Apple Watch stand, and given their design history, it’s no surprise that the result is an elegant little desktop sculpture. TimeStand is machined from a single piece of aluminum with a weighted, rubber-padded base, distinctly modern and substantial, yet $20 less expensive than options I’ve previously reviewed from Mophie and Nomad. Moreover, TimeStand’s unique shape offers compatibility with all Apple Watch bands, though there are also a couple of caveats you might want to be aware of…

<a href="http://rss.buysellad...6&c=1348924192"target="_blank">

TimeStand’s most distinctive feature is its appearance. Designed by Denmark-based design studio Tools, the shape is described by Just Mobile as a cylinder, though it invisibly tapers from perfectly round at the top to an oval at the bottom, with a very minimal 1.75″ to 1.95″ footprint. Just Mobile chose to angle the top surface, and cut a large cylindrical hole out of the center, forming a “C” shape with the remaining metal. Photographs might suggest that the open side of the C has sharp edges, but they’ve actually been finished softly enough that you won’t cut yourself on them.

<img title="Review: Just Mobile's TimeStand is the $40 metal Apple Watch stand we've been waiting for" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-386734" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=655&h=437"alt="timestand-1" width="655" height="437" />

The central hole isn’t just visually striking — it’s also functional. It’s set at just enough of a distance from TimeStand’s top to enable the remaining metal to support the Apple Watch while letting any band dangle underneath. While you can physically turn the Apple Watch into landscape orientation, the recline Just Mobile chose for the watch is a degree or two shy of activating the large clock-faced Nightstand Mode on watchOS 2.0, at least as of the current beta version. Some people will consider this disappointing; others won’t mind at all.

<img title="Review: Just Mobile's TimeStand is the $40 metal Apple Watch stand we've been waiting for" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-386735" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=655&h=437"alt="timestand-6" width="655" height="437" />

Like every other Apple Watch stand, TimeStand requires you to self-supply an AppleWatch Magnetic Charging Cable — either the one that comes with your Apple Watch, or a spare. Predictably, the cable is routed through the left edge of the stand, with the circular inductive charging disc resting inside a rubber-lined recess on the top. Any version of the Magnetic Charging Cable will be elevated enough above TimeStand to avoid metal-on-metal contact; Apple’s thinner metal version of the Magnetic Charging Cable sticks out roughly 2mm from TimeStand, and the thicker plastic Sport version of the cable is around 4mm. Adding an external rubber ring might have provided peace of mind for nervous Apple Watch owners, but wouldn’t have looked as nice, and most likely wouldn’t have made an actual difference in day-to-day use.

A channel in TimeStand’s left edge holds the cable before it routes through TimeStand’s bottom, and emerges from a hole in the back. While the channel could stand to be deeper on the left side to better hide the cable, it’s secured well enough at two bend points to avoid accidentally slipping out during normal use. The weight inside TimeStand’s base is also heavy enough that you won’t pull the stand up every time you remove your Apple Watch from the charging puck. My only concern would be making sure that any closed metal band avoids rubbing against the edges of the metal C on insertion or removal.

I’ve been a fan of Just Mobile’s metal design pieces for years, so for $40, TimeStand strikes me as a very good value: it offers the same level of style and quality of materials you’ll find in $60 stands from companies such as Mophie and Nomad, but at a price tag closer to entry-level $20 Spigen stands. The one obvious omission — and something history suggests Just Mobile will eventually address — is TimeStand’s launch with only a single color, silver, which matches the majority of Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport models, while leaving room for future gray, black, or even gold metal versions. Color options, and potentially a slight adjustment to the top angle for Nightstand Mode compatibility, would take TimeStand from “very cool” to “universally appealing.”
