Why I won't be sad to see One to One go away: It'...

one_to_one_training_hero.jpg?itok=gqPJ5o
For people making a living selling and supporting Apple gear, Apple's One to One program is a liability, not an asset.
A rumor surfaced this week that Apple's excising its One to One program at its retail store in favor of expanding the free group workshops program. One to One allows owners of new Macs and other devices to purchase a year's worth of weekly, personalized training with Apple specialists in Apple retail stores at a steal of a price: $99. If One to One does indeed go away, I can understand why. It's very expensive for stores to do, and many customers can get effective training other ways.
Serenity Caldwell recently shared her experiences as a past Apple Store employee who did One to One training. Amidst some touching anecdotes about her customers and experiences doing the training, she said, "That program may not make sense for Apple retail anymore. The stores are getting bigger and more crowded, and personalized training was always a harder sell in noisy, rambunctious environments."
Anyone who's been in an Apple retail store over the past few years knows what Ren's talking about. Apple retail stores are crazy busy. Apple wants to maximize the profit for each of its locations, so it puts them in heavily trafficked areas and hasn't expanded their footprint to new locations dramatically unless demographics show that areas can support additional stores. The net result is that the Apple Store has gotten busier and busier. With few exceptions, locations like that just aren't a good learning experience.
The retail store where I work, while not owned by Apple, is authorized by Apple to sell and service much of their gear. We're located almost an hour's drive by highway from the closest Apple-owned store. There are other places in the area to buy Apple gear: Best Buy, Walmart, Target. But for personalized sales and service, many people are much more comfortable coming to us.

Apple has set customer expectations, and some of our customers expect to get the same deals they can get from an Apple store.

One of the first things they'll tell me is, "I'm not a computer person." I already knew that, for the most part: After all, they're in a computer store. "Computer people" haven't set foot in computer stores unless it's an emergency ever since the Internet hit the scene. Customers are often amazed that we don't have a line at the service counter, and that they don't need to make an appointment. Our volume is lower — a lot lower than the Apple Store.
Still, Apple has set customer expectations, and some of our customers expect to get the same deals they can get from an Apple store. So to keep pace with what Apple has done, we also offer a $99 deal for buyers of new Macs and iPads: Ten individual one-hour training sessions to use over the course of a year. While most of our customers turn it down, some new converts to Apple platforms and people who are, frankly, timid with the technology, do take advantage of it.
We also, by the way, offer free seminar-style introductory classes, just as the rumor currently suggests Apple is going to continue to do once the One to One program has run its course. Many people on the fence about buying new gear attend those, to make sure they'll be comfortable with their new products. Some new buyers do too, just to make sure they've got down the basics.
Spending $500 on a new iPad or $1000 on a new Mac can be a really intimidating experience for a lot of people, especially older customers on fixed incomes who may not be as comfortable with technology as their kids and grandkids. That's who our own training caters to the most. We have very few customers buying the training who aren't already eligible for AARP benefits at least, if not Social Security.
Apple makes its computers and portable devices very easy to use, but let's not deceive ourselves: Even Apple products can still be overwhelming, confusing and just plain scary for many. For them, One to One assistance and other individualized training is really helpful.
The problem is that individualized training purchased as a package is a money-loser for the store. We're not compensated by Apple for training customers in any way. When a customer buys the $99 deal from us, they're getting customized training for $10 an hour, which doesn't even cover the employee's wages.

We have to offer training to keep customers, but we're not a social welfare agency.

I certainly appreciate that people are looking to get the most out of the expensive technology they purchase, and I appreciate that some people who want or need this gear don't have a lot of discretionary income to throw around.
Right now Apple's One to One pricing doesn't let us do that. We have to offer training to keep customers, but we're not a social welfare agency. We have to make enough money to pay employees, keep the lights on, and put enough in the owner's pockets to make the business operation worthwhile. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for us to see it go away.
Disclaimer: I speak only for myself, not the management or ownership of the third-party Apple-authorized retailer where I work.

Vine now supplies you with beats for your looping videos

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

Vine is allowing its user base to add music to their loops. Featured artists will supply the beats to add a new dimension to your submitted content. Once you've finished capturing a new video on your smartphone, which in itself is now easier with the new Snap to Beat feature, the network will provide a selection of songs that can be added to the looping video.

Checking out what music is available through Vine is one way to discover new music, and there will be a small note icon on any looping video that contains a featured track. This icon will take you to a desired location on the internet set by the artist – it could be their blog, store listing or social media profiles. It's a neat way to checking out what the track is without having to rely on others for said details.

The news is perfect for those who either had to rely on external resources to add notes to their videos, or found it hard to really form a seamless loop for others to enjoy. If you're interested in learning more about the new features, be sure to give the official blog post a read. The update isn't quite live yet on the store, but we're sure it'll not be long.

PayAnywhere's mobile card reader brings Apple Pay to...

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

Apple has partnered with PayAnywhere, a mobile credit card reader service that is currently used at over 300,000 locations in the United States. Apple Pay is already supported by the largest banks, retailers and credit unions in the country, and the latest integration with PayAnywhere allows small businesses to take advantage of the contactless payment service.

PayAnywhere's mobile reader will be available for sale at Apple Stores starting this September for $39.95, with merchants purchasing the reader getting $5,000 worth of free Apple Pay transaction processing. In addition to Apple Pay, PayAnywhere's mobile reader can process regular magnetic stripe credit cards as well as other forms of NFC payments.

By partnering with PayAnywhere, Apple is on track to reach its goal of 1.5 million locations where its contactless payment service is accepted by the end of the year.

How to use the new portrait and landscape ratios in Insta...

instagram-update-new-sharing-iphone.jpg?

For years any and all photos we've uploaded to Instagram have been forced into a 1:1 square aspect ratio. We've lost arms, heads, fronts, backs, tops, and bottoms, all the the crop. Well, no longer. Now Instagram supports portrait and landscape aspect ratios for both photos and video. No black or white bars needed. Here's how!

Note: Instagram neglected to mention that the aspect ratio feature won't simply appear by downloading the app. It's "rolling out" over time. So, if you don't see the button, don't panic. Check back in a few hours or days and hopefully it'll be there. You can try restarting Instagram or rebooting your iPhone, but patience is your best bet. (Hopefully Instagram will be clearer about the nature of their updates in the future.)

How to post landscape or portrait pictures or videos to Instagram

Pictures and video default to the square aspect ratio when you first select them but you can no easily adjust them from there.

  1. Launch Instagram from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on the Open Camera button.
  3. Choose your photo or videos.
  4. Tap on the full size button overlay at the bottom left of the photo. (Or simply pinch and zoom out.)
  5. Tap Next to continue on.

    instagram-aspect-ratio-screens.jpg?itok=

You can now add filters and effects, same as always, and post and share your instas when you're done.

<div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p><a href="http://www.imore.com...int">Sprint</a>has announced its latest bid to pull customers away from one of its biggest rivals, and it's a doozy. To "celebrate" the AT&amp;T and DirecTV merger, Sprint is offering DirecTV customers a full year of service for free. <!--break--> The plan that Sprint is offering up for free includes 12 months of unlimited talk, text, and 2GB of data per line on up to five lines. While this obviously isn't for the data-hungry, you can't beat free.</p> <p>Additionally, Sprint says it will offer to buy out switching customers' current contracts and pay up to $300 per working phone. To take advantage of the deal — which starts on Friday, August 28, and runs through September 30 — those interested must show verification of their DirecTV account by either signing into their account while at a Sprint store or showing a copy of a recent bill.</p> <p>Finally, there are a couple of catches with the deal. Customers are still responsible for paying for their devices, and they must also cover a one-time $36 activation fee, along with taxes and surcharges each month. Further, after the year is up, customers on this plan will be moved to a rate-per-line plan that runs from $50 for one line to $180 for five. Still, this is a pretty aggressive offer from the nations fourth-largest carrier, and an interesting way to combat AT&amp;T's bundle offers.</p> <p>Source: <a href="http://newsroom.sprint.com/news-releases/sprint-is-celebrating-the-merger-of-directv-and-att-directv-customers-get-free-service-by-switching-to-sprint.htm?view_id=11211">Sprint</a></p> </div></div></div><br clear='all'/><br/><br/><a href="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/234567879725/u/49/f/616881/c/33998/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/rc/1/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/234567879725/u/49/f/616881/c/33998/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/234567879725/u/49/f/616881/c/33998/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/rc/2/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/234567879725/u/49/f/616881/c/33998/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/234567879725/u/49/f/616881/c/33998/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/rc/3/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/234567879725/u/49/f/616881/c/33998/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/234567879725/u/49/f/616881/c/33998/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/a2.htm"><img src="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/234567879725/u/49/f/616881/c/33998/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/a2.img" border="0"/></a><img width="1" height="1" src="http://pi.feedsportal.com/r/234567879725/u/49/f/616881/c/33998/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/a2t.img" border="0"/><img width='1' height='1' src='http://tipb.com.feedsportal.com/c/33998/f/616881/s/495a1ef8/sc/28/mf.gif' border='0'/><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheIphoneBlog/~4/hPCpBpfQBIQ" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>

As they have done for most of its events in the past few years, Apple will once again live stream the upcoming iPhone event. The recently-announced event will take place on September 9, beginning at 1 p.m. EDT/10 a.m. PDT.
From Apple's event website:

Join us here on September 9 at 10 a.m. PDT to watch the keynote live.

In a break from previous years, Apple's stream will not be exclusive to Apple devices and browsers. Apple will also stream out to 75 million Windows 10 users using Microsoft's new Edge browser. If you are watching through an Apple device, iPhones and iPads will need to be running iOS 7 or later, while Macs will need to be on OS X 10.8.5 or later with at least Safar 6.0.5. To watch the event on your television, you'll need a second- or third-generation Apple TV.
iMore will be there at the event, so be sure to stay tuned from the latest on Apple's announcements.

iPhone 6c reportedly not in the cards for Apple's Sep...

While Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus at its event on September 9, don't expect a new, smaller, plastic-sheathed iPhone 6c to come along with them. A new report claims that Apple has indeed been testing such a device, but that it is not yet ready for prime time.
From 9to5Mac:

Sources say that while Apple has been working on a new 4-inch iPhone with the capabilities of last year's iPhone 6, the device is not yet ready to ship. Interestingly, Apple has also internally prototyped a new, smaller iPhone with a 3.5-inch display, the same size of the iPhone's screen from the first model in 2007 to the iPhone 4S in 2011, but it does not appear that the company plans to move forward with actually releasing such a device.

Additionally, Apple will reportedly discontinue the iPhone 5c, the multicolored plastic phone originally introduced in 2013 alongside the iPhone 5s. Instead, the company will apparently continue to sell the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, and 5s.
We'll get a better idea about Apple's phone lineup after its event on September 9.
