Update: after about 35 minutes, it appears that the Beats 1 stream is back online. The outage may have been caused by an Amazon Web services outage on the East Coast of the US.

Many readers are reporting Beats1 Radio is offline with error -12880 on iOS and just a spin on iTunes for Mac. As per usual, Apple’s System status page shows no outage but currently we aren’t able to find anyone able to get online.

SoundHound iOS app adds Apple Music integration for liste...

SoundHound, a popular sound recognition app for detecting and searching for songs and other audio clips, today gets an update that brings integration with the just launched Apple Music streaming service.

With the updated SoundHound app landing today, users will now get an “Apple Music Listen Now” link to listen to a song on the streaming service (when available) through the home screen, song pages, and throughout the app.

Other competitive apps, such as Shazam, have already updated with similar functionality. The apps previously only linked users to purchase songs through iTunes and other services, but also promote competitive streaming services for listening such as Spotify and Rdio. For SoundHound, users will find an Apple Music streaming link next to songs through various features, including: music identification, personalized History, Top Charts, or Music Maps.

Interestingly, SoundHound will also be promoting Apple Music’s Beats 1 live radio station:

SoundHound is also showcasing Apple Music’s new global radio streaming station Beats 1. Users will see a “Beats 1 Radio” row within song pages, enabling easy, one-tap access to listen to the streaming radio broadcast, which features various artists hosting programs and full-time DJs, led by ex-BBC host Zane Lowe.

You can grab SoundHound on the App Store now.

Hands-On Walkthrough of Apple Music and Beats 1 Radio

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News
Apple's much-anticipated music service, Apple Music, launched this morning as part of iOS 8.4, bringing on-demand streaming music, the Beats 1 radio station, and Apple Connect, Apple's new social network aimed at letting artists connect with fans in new and unique ways.

We went hands-on with Apple Music in iOS 8.4 to give you a look at how the new service works, what it looks like, what it costs, and how to use it. Check out the video below to get a thorough overview of all three Apple Music components.

Apple Music's main streaming feature is a "For You" section within the Music app that offers up on-demand music recommendations based on preferences you've entered and music you've listed to previously. "For You" is able to offer more refined, tailored recommendations as you listen to more and more music.

The "New" tab, also part of the on-demand streaming service, displays a variety of music that's new and popular, organized into songs and albums. This section also includes music picks from Apple Music editors.

Much of the content in these two Music app features requires a subscription to Apple Music, which is free for three months, after which it's priced at $9.99 or $14.99 for a family. A third "Radio" tab in the app houses the new 24/7 live Beats 1 radio station and other radio offerings, and radio content will always be free to access.

Apple Connect, the artist-centric social network, is also available through a tab in the Music app, and it displays status updates, photos, videos, and more from artists you follow. The final section is focused on "My Music," housing music you've added from Apple Music, songs you've purchased from iTunes, and playlists you've created, all in one spot.

All of these features that are available in iOS 8.4's new Music app are also available in iTunes 12.2, which was just released this afternoon. iTunes 12.2 offers up all of the same tabs and access to music, radio stations, and curated playlists.

Because Apple Music is free for the first three months, all iTunes users can download it and check it out for themselves without having to shell out cash. If you haven't downloaded Apple Music yet, it's well worth giving it a look.

Hands-on with Apple Music (Video)

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

apple-music-00_00_11_24-still011.png?w=7

Today we’re taking a quick look at Apple Music. This new service came along with the iOS 8.4 update and effectively merges Beats Music with a new streaming service from Apple. The good news is, Apple Music will also be available for Android and Apple TV as well later this fall. Everyone also gets a 3 month free trial in case you’re on the fence about subscribing to the service right away…

img.php?z=1288305&k=0d0633b70e3c2bda246a

The update brings along a refreshed Music app icon and this is where you’ll find Apple Music along with the music you’ve purchased through iTunes. Inside of the app we have a new layout with different tabs and organization. When you first sign up for Apple Music, you’ll be prompted to choose different genres and artists that you like. This will begin curating playlists and albums for streaming based on your interests.

The first tab at the bottom is where you’ll find music “for you.” These playlists, artists, and albums are available to stream instantly, add to your music library, and even save for offline playback. If you’d like to find other artists available on Apple Music or within your music library, you can tap on the search icon in the top right corner and type in an artist, song, or album name.

Next up, we have the “new” tab which will likely be similar for everyone using the app. This presents artists and albums new to Apple Music and can be streamed or saved to your library.

Check out our Apple Music hands-on video below:

In the middle, there’s a “radio” tab. This is basically what iTunes Radio should have been from the beginning. At the moment, the top banner showcases Beats 1 Radio which is a live station that has different scheduled events throughout the day. By tapping on this station you can see the current DJ lineup and featured shows that air on this station. The other stations available are pretty straight forward though. Tap on a station and it will begin playing content based on the title.

The fourth tab is called “connect” and works as somewhat of a social network for Apple Music. This allows you to follow various artists and see what’s happening in a single stream. You have the ability to like posts and comment on them with others that are into that artist as well. By default, Apple Music will follow artists it finds within your music library, but you can easily follow new artists through their personal pages or access them through a specific album.

Finally, we have the “My Music” section. This is exactly what you’d expect. It combines the music you’ve purchased through iTunes as well as the music you’ve added to your library from Apple Music. At the top, there are two tabs that allow you to switch between your library and your playlists.

Apple Music is exactly what I’ve been waiting for and I’m looking forward to its release on Apple TV and Android in the near future. If you’d like to sign up for Apple Music after the free trial has ended, it will run you $9.99 per month for an individual or $14.99 per month for a family of up to 6 members with individual accounts and listening preferences. It seems like a pretty good deal to me, but let us know what you think about Apple Music in the comment section below.

Appeals court says Apple is liable for e-book price fixing

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

The Second Court of Appeals has affirmed (PDF) that Apple is liable for engaging in e-book price fixing, holding up the 2013 judgment of a district court that ruled in favor of the Department of Justice (DoJ) and 33 states.

The DoJ sued Apple as well as publishers Penguin, HarperCollins, Hachette, Simon & Schuster, and Macmillan back in 2012. The publishers agreed to settle for $164 million. Apple fought the charges and lost, and it appealed the decision in February 2014.

When it appealed last year, Apple argued that at the time of its entry into the e-book business, Amazon was its only real competitor, and Amazon was selling e-books for $9.99, which Apple said was well below a competitive range. Instead, Apple said that it worked with publishers to hit a price point that would help Apple be profitable enough to enter the e-book market.
