Verizon will introduce a revamped company logo later this...

Earlier this week, Google revamped its official logo, and soon Verizon Wireless will do the same thing. The wireless carrier will officially reveal the new logo for the company on Thursday.

According to Ad Age:

Verizon said that design agency Pentagram created the new logo. Landor Associates crafted the old Verizon logo back in 2000, when Verizon Communications was formed after the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE Corp."

Even though the change wasn't supposed to be revealed today, the new logo leaked onto the Internet via Twitter. The two major changes are that the red "Z" in the middle of the old logo has been ditched and the large red checkmark above the logo has now been moved to the right side and cut down in size.

There's no word if Verizon plans to launch a major new marketing campaign on Thursday alongside the revamped logo.

iPad Pro, iPad mini 4 could debut next week, go on sale i...

People who have been waiting for Apple to launch a large iPad Pro tablet may get their wish in the near future. A new report claims that the company is planning to start taking pre-orders for the iPad Pro, along with the iPad mini 4, in October, with a launch planned for sometime in November.

According to 9to5Mac:

The "iPad Pro" (which is actually the planned name of the device) is currently scheduled to hit retail outlets in November, following a pre-order campaign that will launch toward the end of October, sources indicate."

The report adds that while both new iPad models are currently expected to be officially revealed at Apple's September 9 press event, it does hold out the possibility that the company could decide to wait and host another media event in October to formally introduce the iPad Pro and iPad mini 4. iMore will be attending Apple's big event in San Francisco next week to get first-hand reports on the company's big reveals.

Apple and Samsung's legal wrangling to resume in spri...

The long-running legal struggle between Apple and Samsung has been put on hold temporarily, to resume at some point next year. Judge Lucy Koh has set a new spring 2016 time frame for a new damages trail that will determine, again, what Samsung owes Apple.

From The Recorder:

Tuesday's order sets retrial in March or April 2016 on patent infringement damages for five Samsung products: Fascinate, Galaxy S4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Mesmerize and Vibrant. Those are the five phones that a jury found in 2012 both infringed Apple Inc.'s patents and diluted its trade dress. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled in May that Samsung Electronics Co. did not dilute Apple's trade dress as a matter of law, requiring the new damages trial.

This will be the fourth jury trial by these parties in front of Judge Koh. This case extends from Apple's original legal victory over Samsung in 2012, in which a jury awarded them $1 billion, ruling that Samsung had infringed on Apple patents and trade dress. Much of that judgment has since been reversed.

iPhone 6s said to be identical to previous models, featur...

apple_care_iphone_6_temp_hero.jpg?itok=Z

Update 9/2/15: 9to5Mac is also reporting that the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will be made from the same 7000 series aluminum alloy as the Apple Watch.

The iPhone 6s will reportedly look almost identical to both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, though with many internal changes to its casing. Internal changes will apparently include a new mounting structure for the logic board and other components.

According to photos obtained by 9to5Mac, most components visible to customers will remain unchanged:

The bottom design of the iPhone 6S is exactly the same as with the prior model, down to the number of speaker holes and the position of the headphone, microphone, and Lightning holes. This will be good news for case and accessory makers, who won't have to worry about redesigning their iPhone 6 products for the iPhone 6S.

This isn't that surprising, as the the so-called "S" iPhone models tend to have, if any, only minor external differences with their predecessors, with those changes often coming down to colors. The iPhone 6s is expected to be released later this year, and is said to include Apple's A9 system-on-a-chip, support for Force Touch, 2GB of RAM, and a 12MP camera.

Apple TV refresh said to offer 16GB option, no 4K support...

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

The expected reveal of the new Apple TV is coming soon, and a clearer picture is forming as to the hardware expected in the little box. In addition to the expected A8 system-on-a-chip and faster Wi-Fi, the new Apple TV will reportedly come in a 16GB variant. This would make sense, as the new model is also said to come with an App Store.

While 16GB might seem a little small, Apple is apparently unconcerned, as most content will stream to the box from the Internet, according to 9to5Mac:

While the new Apple TV will include an App Store for deep support for gaming, sources say that the limited storage offered by 8GB and 16GB flash memory is appropriate for the new model, as all content outside of applications will be streamed directly from the Internet.

The new Apple TV will also reportedly not include 4K support in this iteration. Given the current dearth of 4K content that's available, it's likely that Apple wouldn't want to devote resources to something that only a very small fraction of users would even be able to experience.

The new Apple TV is expected to be unveiled next week at Apple's September 9 event. The first major update to the set-top box in five years, the new Apple TV is expected to feature an Apple A8 system-on-a-chip, a brand new remote with motion control, a touchpad, and Siri support, as well as universal search. Recent reports put the starting price of the Apple TV at $149.

Dubai-based airline Emirates has announced that it will offer customers in the U.S. and U.K. the chance to use Apple Pay for booking their flights. Support for the payment service comes as part of the app's latest update.

With Apple Pay support in the app, Emirates customers can purchase their tickets through the app without needing to fill in and store any credit or debit card information with Emirates. Emirates will also apparently offer the same rewards to customers purchasing with Apple Pay as they do to those that purchase with credit and debit cards.

You can grab the latest update to the Emirates app with support for Apple Pay from the App Store now.

Hulu adds commercial-free video streaming option for...

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

hulu-plus-iphone6-hero_0.jpg?itok=PqMyDo

Hulu is finally going to give its subscribers an option to get rid of those pesky ads while watching current episodes of their favorite TV shows. The company has launched a new option that will offer commercial-free video streaming option for $11.99 a month.

The company stated:

"At Hulu, we pride ourselves on listening to our customers and giving them the best possible experience," said Mike Hopkins, CEO, Hulu. "Many of our customers have asked us for a commercial free option, and so today we are excited to introduce just that. Providing more choice for consumers is fundamental to the Hulu experience, in addition to an array of choices in content and devices, our customers can now choose to watch with or without commercials."

People who are already signed up for the current $7.99 a month option, with ads, can switch to the new commercial-free subscription program for an extra $4 a month. The new $11.99 service comes as Hulu is expanding into offering more movies, including a new multi-year agreement to stream movies from the Epix cable TV network. It is also making more investments in original programming like its biggest rival Netflix, including the upcoming event series 11/22/63, based on the novel by Stephen King.

There is some fine print to this deal, however, as explained in Hulu's FAQ page:

For a small number of shows, however, we have not obtained the rights to stream commercial free and they are not included in our No Commercials plan. You can still easily access these shows with a short commercial before and after each episode with no interruptions during the episode. Specific shows that still have commercials accessible through the No Commercials plan will be noted throughout the signup, switching, and playback experience. While the list of shows may change, these shows are currently: Grey's Anatomy, Once Upon A Time, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Scandal, Grimm, New Girl, and How To Get Away With Murder.

New Apple TV said to bet big on universal search

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

With the expected reveal of the new Apple TV just a week away, a new report offers more detail on the rumored universal search feature for the box. A major facet of the Apple TV's reported software overall, universal search is said to allow users to search not only the iTunes Store, but also other video services like Netflix and Hulu. Siri will also reportedly serve as the primary way to use this new search.

From Buzzfeed:

Instead of searching the catalogs of multiple video services one-at-a-time for a particular movie, you'll now be able to search all — or most of them — at once and then choose the service on which you'd like to watch it. You'll also be able to search for actors and directors, and run other more targeted searches as well — all with Siri.

Search is said not only to be powered by the same proactive assistant that will be found in iOS 9 on the iPhone and iPad, but also technology from Matcha, which Apple acquired in 2013.

Buzzfeed also reports that the new Apple TV will also start at $149. We expect to get all the details on Apple's new set-top box next week at Apple's September 9 event.

Mojang prepping native Minecraft launcher for OS X

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

minecraft_windows_81.jpg?itok=6O5-t2K8

Minecraft has been available on OS X for a long time, but Mac gamers have so far had to use a Java launcher to start the sandbox game. Now, Minecraft's developer Mojang has created an early version of a native OS X launcher for the game that should make it easier for Mac players to get started.

A post on the Reddit Minecraft page has a link to the new Mac OS X launcher. Mojang stated:

It does not require Java to be installed, nor any other dependencies. Just open up the link, drag the Minecraft icon to your applications folder, and you're all done. That's it.

There is one caveat: You must be running at least Mac OS X Lion (10.7) or newer. Sorry, but Java itself isn't supported on anything lower. :(

Please give it a test and let me know any issues you encounter with it. Note that the visual launcher itself has not changed, so any bugs in that are probably pre-existing and we aren't looking to fix those right now (but will very soon; there's some big changes coming!). We will test the self-updating a few times over the course of the day, so be prepared to allow it to download up to 55MB a few times over.

Mojang is looking for players to give feedback on the native OS X Minecraft launcher. It adds that while this early version is a bit slow, it will "be much, much faster" when the final version of the launcher is released.
