Review: PowerSkin’s PoP’n 3 sticks a 4000mAh Lightning ba...

<img title="Review: PowerSkin's PoP'n 3 sticks a 4000mAh Lightning battery on your iPhone 6 / Plus as needed" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372121" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="popn3-4" width="704" height="470" />

Yesterday, I reviewed PowerSkin’s Spare,a semi-protective battery case designed specifically for the iPhone 6. While Spare didn’t strike me as a great value for its asking price, PowerSkin also sells a more powerful alternative called PoP’n 3 that can work with multiple iPhones, including the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and earlier iPhone 5 models. And despite having nearly twice as much power as Spare — enough power to fully recharge any iPhone — it sells for only $50-$55, depending on the color you prefer.

PoP’n 3 isn’t a typical USB battery pack, even though it looks like one. Made mostly from metallic plastic that matches the spacegray, silver, or gold colors of recent iPhones, it has a Lightning cable built into the bottom for easy connection to bare or encased devices. Suction cups on one side let it attach or detach from your iPhone on an as-desired basis, and unlike iPhone-specific battery cases, enable it to function as a just-in-case power source for iPads, too…

<a href="http://rss.buysellad...7&c=1784373755"target="_blank">

<img title="Review: PowerSkin's PoP'n 3 sticks a 4000mAh Lightning battery on your iPhone 6 / Plus as needed" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372119" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="popn3-2" width="704" height="470" />

As the third-generation version of PowerSkin’sPoP’n battery pack, PoP’n 3 offers the family’s best overall combination of design and value. Measuring roughly 4.3″ tall by 2.3″ wide by 0.5″ thick at its largest points, PoP’n 3 fits a 4000mAh battery into a metallic plastic chassis that’s not much larger than the original PoP’n battery’s 2000mAh cell. It’s only a few millimeters wider than iPhone 5 models, and about a half-inch shorter, so it can fit on any Lightning-equipped iPhone like a backpack. But it was clearly designed mostly for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as its capacity is a better match for the larger iPhones’ bigger batteries.

<img title="Review: PowerSkin's PoP'n 3 sticks a 4000mAh Lightning battery on your iPhone 6 / Plus as needed" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372118" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="popn3-1" width="704" height="470" />

The biggest difference between PoP’n 3 and typical USB external batteries is the integrated suction cup pad on its back. There are 24 small suction cups and one large, clear microadhesive surface that can be used “if necessary” to attach PoP’n 3 to your iPhone — I found it necessary. While the suction cups and microadhesive surface work on a wide range of surfaces, it’s fairly easy to get an imperfect alignment between the battery and your iPhone, so if you’re cosmetically obsessive, a traditional battery case might better suit your needs. On the other hand, I was very pleased to find that PoP’n 3 fit right between the steel pins on the back of Incipio’sTrestle for iPhone 6 Plus, which meant that I could use my regular iPhone case along with a spare battery on an as-needed basis.

<img title="Review: PowerSkin's PoP'n 3 sticks a 4000mAh Lightning battery on your iPhone 6 / Plus as needed" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372209" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="popn3-6" width="704" height="470" />

Another key distinction between PoP’n 3 and common USB batteries is the integrated Lightning plug, which has been redesigned from PoP’n and PoP’n 2 for greater flexibility and case-compatibility. Apple-licensed with Made for iPhone branding, PoP’n 3 is capable of recharging iPhones at their expected 1-Amp speeds, and also works with Lightning-equipped iPods and iPads. Connected to the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple’s most power-hungry iPhone, PoP’n 3 was able to deliver a 102% overall recharge before expiring, going from 2% to 100% and then adding 4% to a partially discharged phone. Any other iPhone will be able to achieve a complete recharge while still having plenty of juice left over. Interestingly, though PoP’n 3 offers only 1-Amp output, it can be recharged at 2.1-Amp speeds, which is a nice benefit if you have a spare iPad charger or 2.1/2.4-AmpUSB port handy.

<img title="Review: PowerSkin's PoP'n 3 sticks a 4000mAh Lightning battery on your iPhone 6 / Plus as needed" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372122" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="popn3-5" width="704" height="470" />

One unusual thing did come up during my testing. PoP’n 3’s single button is supposed to turn on the battery’s power after being held for five seconds, alternately triggering the power indicator lights when it’s tapped. Although the power-on feature worked perfectly when connected to partially powered iPhones and iPads, it wouldn’t work when the iPhone 6 Plus was completely discharged; on multiple separate tests with a completely discharged iPhone, I had to jumpstart the phone first using another power source, then connect PoP’n 3 once the phone had 2% or more power. I haven’t seen this issue in any other battery I’ve tested, and some people will consider the battery’s inability to resuscitate a dead iPhone a show-stopping flaw.

<img title="Review: PowerSkin's PoP'n 3 sticks a 4000mAh Lightning battery on your iPhone 6 / Plus as needed" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372120" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="popn3-3" width="704" height="470" />

That having been said, PoP’n 3 is much like iPhone-specific battery cases in that it’s designed primarily for people who need extra energy while their devices are in use. The backpack-style design will appeal more to some people than others, perhaps finding its greatest audience with presently underserved iPhone 6 Plus owners, users of multiple Lightning devices, and people who want to occasionally couple a battery with a favorite case. There are morecapacious bargain batteries out there, and some great dedicated iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus battery cases, but if you want something that’s convenient for as-needed use alongside an iPhone, PoP’n 3 is worth your consideration.

Jay-Z’s new Tidal music service respects the artist, but...

<img title="Jay-Z’s new Tidal music service respects the artist, but rips off Spotify’s UI" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-372222" src="https://9to5mac.file...ng?w=704&h=455"alt="Tidal-vs-Spotify-UI" width="704" height="455" />

In case you hadn’t heard, Jay-Z is this week launching (relaunching) the Tidal music service he recently acquired along with a lot of help from industry friends. The company is hoping its model is innovative and helps artists earn more, but its UI for the web app appears to be a shameless copy of Spotify, as you can see in the comparison screenshot: Tidal above, Spotify below.
<a href="http://rss.buysellad...7&c=1792363308"target="_blank">

The goal for Tidal, according to <spanclass="s2">interviews with Jay-Z this week in Billboard and elsewhere, is essentially a value proposition for artists that feel they aren’t getting a fair share of revenues through streaming services like Spotify and Apple’s Beats— an issue that has picked up more attention recently when Taylor Swift decided to pull her music from Spotify. Swift’s music will be available on Tidal.

Now someone just needs to remind Jay-Z that UI designers are artists too.

It sure looks a lot like Tidal will be one of Apple’s biggest competitors for Beats and Apple’s upcoming revamped music service. In interviews this week promoting the launch of Tidal, Jay-Z claimed that Jimmy Iovine, the record industry bigwig and Beats cofounder, was <spanclass="s2">attempting to lure away top-selling artists to join Apple’s upcoming service.

<img title="ITC agrees to Ericsson's request to investigate Apple for alleged patent infringement, but iPhone ban unlikely" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372215" src="https://9to5mac.file...ng?w=704&h=322"alt="iphone-ban" width="704" height="322" />

Ericsson’s attempt to have the iPhone bannedfrom US sale over a patent dispute moved one step forward yesterday as the ITC agreed to investigate. Ericsson claims that iPhones infringe a number of its patents for fundamental cellphone technologies, including both GSM and LTE. Apple denies any infringement, and says that Ericsson is in any case demanding unreasonable amounts.

In an attempt to up the ante, Ericsson called on the U.S. International Trade Commission to block imports of the iPhone into the country, and the ITC has now agreed to carry out an investigation, reports PCWorld.

The ITC did <spanclass="s2">previously apply a limited ban to the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and 3G iPads over a patent claim by Samsung (later overturned by President Obama), but in this case it seems likely that Ericsson is merely hoping that the possibility will force a faster settlement than would be reached through the courts.

Filed under: AAPL Company, iOS Devices Tagged: Apple Inc, Ericsson, iPhone, ITC, LTE (telecommunication), Patent, patent dispute, United States International Trade Commission
Visit 9to5Mac to find more special coverage of AAPL Company, iOS Devices, and iPhone.

What do you think? Discuss "ITC agrees to Ericsson’s request to investigate Apple for alleged patent infringement, but iPhone ban unlikely" with our community.

Data from IDC and App Annie suggested that both Apple and Google are likely to see their app store revenues doubling within the next four years, reports Re/code. Based on Apple’s 2014 total revenue of $10B, this would suggest that Apple is likely to hit total revenue of $20B in 2018, with developers seeing $14B of it.

“I would consider this projection conservative,” App Annie CEO Bertrand Schmitt said in an interview, noting that the company has consistently been revising its forecasts up over the past two years as revenue has exceeded expectations.

The study also suggested that the trend toward freemium apps, which derive their income from in-app purchases, will continue–though this model is more common on Android than iOS …
http://rss.buysellad...658&c=135613865
Advertising revenue is important for both platforms, said IDC, accounting for 68% of US mobile app revenue last year.
App Store revenue is likely to be boosted by the launch of the Apple Watch. The first third-party apps were added to the App Store last week in advance of the watch going on sale next month. If you’re eagerly awaiting your opportunity to buy yours, you can find everything you need to know in our Apple Watch FAQ.
