So why is Apple implementing it?

Malware is a really serious problem not just on Windows but the Mac too—it seems like almost every week, we get a new report of some sort of malware or adware that's attacking Apple users. Most of these outbreaks are contained quickly, fortunately, and mitigated by the built-in anti-malware and technologies like Gatekeeper.

Apple can always do better, and in El Capitan, they have. To help bolster the Mac's security against malware infections, Apple's come up with System Integrity Protection

Before El Capitan, people could easily modify, or allow to be modified, core system files used by OS X by entering their administrator password. It's how, for example, we grant software installers "root" access to setup apps.

That's why, El Capitan has gone "rootless". System Integrity Protection makes sure the vital system files are safe from modification. This is a good thing: It should reduce the likelihood that you can accidentally infect yourself with malware, or that someone can gain access to your Mac or your files by escalating privilege exploits remotely.

If you use system-modifying utilities and system extensions that made essential changes to the way OS X works, however, you may notice that they no longer function or need to be updated.

SIP created problems for some developers during El Capitan's public beta development period over the summer. In many cases those problems have either been straightened out or are getting straightened out now. So check with the makers of the apps you use to see if they have updates.

And of course stay tuned to iMore, because we'll report on key updates as they become available.

Of course, you do have ultimate control over what happens on your Mac, so you can deactivate System Integrity Protection if you want to. I strongly advise against doing this, but I completely understand that you may be dependent on software that has to work regardless. I'll just reiterate one last time that SIP has been instituted in El Capitan for a reason: To protect you and to protect your Mac. Apple takes your privacy very seriously.

How to turn off System Integrity Protection in El Capitan

Click the  menu.

Select Restart...

Hold down command-R to boot into the Recovery System.

Click the Utilities menu and select Terminal.

Type csrutil disable and press return.

Close the Terminal app.

Click the  menu and select Restart....

If you decide later you want to re-engage SIP (and I earnestly hope that you do), repeat these steps, changing csrutil disable to csrutil enable instead.

Again, SIP has been instituted in El Capitan for a reason — to improve OS X security, and reduce the risk of anyone who isn't supposed to from getting to your data. But as in all things, your mileage may vary. Just be careful!

[custum:elcapbox]

Maps transit directions expand to Boston and Sydney

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

Transit directions in Maps are now available for two new cities: Boston, MA and Sydney, Australia. Residents of or visitors to the two cities can now fire up Apple Maps to get directions around the city using buses and trains.

Transit directions were one of the big new features announced for Maps in both iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan, but the number of cities supported has been rather limited from the outset. In the U.S., Maps launched with transit directions in Baltimore, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.. Other cities around the world include London, Berlin, Mexico City, Toronto, and more than 300 cities in China.

With today's additions, that list grows by two cities just weeks after the official launch of transit directions in Maps. We're sure to see transit directions expand to more locales as time wears on, but they're off to a decent start so far.

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News
Roku has pulled the wraps off its latest set-top box, the Roku 4, that brings 4K capabilities to your living room along with announcing an overhaul to its iPhone companion app.
The Roku 4 keeps most of what people love the most about it, namely the huge range of content, while adding some nifty features besides 4K, like a remote finder. Because who can ever keep track of a remote control, right?
A few of the interesting specs:
 • Quad-Core processor, up to 60 fps 4K streaming, HDCP 2.2 and Optical Audio Out
 • 802.11ac MIMO Wi-Fi for optimal wireless
 • Access to more streaming channels for 4K entertainment than any other streaming player with selections from Netflix, M-Go, Amazon Instant Video, ToonGoogles, Vudu and You Tube
 • Curated 4K Spotlight channel exclusive to Roku 4 offers instant access to 4K movies, TV shows and more
 • 4K UHD category within the Roku Channel Store to make finding streaming channels with 4K entertainment quick and easy
 • Remote control with voice search, headphone jack for private listening, and the new Remote Finder
The companion app for Android and iOS is also getting a makeover, as well as the latest Roku 7 OS being pushed out to existing devices:

"The redesigned Roku mobile app offers a major update to the existing free Roku Mobile App for iOS and Android devices, making it easier to access key features including Roku Search, Roku Feed, Remote Control and Play on Roku. Now, with just the tap of the screen, you can instantly access Voice Search, view and add to Roku Feed, launch Play on Roku to display photos and videos on the big screen and much more. Similar to the Roku Home Screen, the Roku Mobile App also displays notifications to make you aware of new updates in the Roku Feed. Additionally, "Pinch to zoom" capabilities lets you view every detail of your personal photos. If you have photos on your mobile device you can cast them and even create new screen savers that plays when Roku 4 is idle."

It doesn't say when the app update will be pushing out, but you'll find the download link below for when it does.
The Roku 4 will cost $129.99 and is available to pre-order now with a view to shipping later on October 21. Roku OS 7 will roll out to current-generation Roku players in the U.S., Canada and the UK, and Roku TVs in the US and Canada from sometime in October and is expected to be completed in November.

How to create folders and add apps to your iPhone 6s and...

28 Sep 2015

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

Keep your Home screen clutter-free by creating folders.

Your iPhone and iPad Home screens can hold dozens and dozens of apps, but thanks to folders, that number leaps up to thousands. If your Home screen is getting a bit messy, consider folders to help you collect and organize apps of a similar type, color, style, or whatever specifics you dictate.

How create folders on your iPhone or iPad
 1. Go to your Home screen.
 2. Touch and hold on the app you want to create a folder for until all apps begin to jiggle and you enter Edit mode. (If you have an iPhone 6s and press too hard, you'll trigger 3D Touch; tap and hold lightly to enter Edit mode.)
 3. While continuing to hold your finger down on the app, drag it on top of another app you want in the same folder.
 4. If you don't like the automatic name iOS creates for your folder, tap the name field and change it to anything you like, then tap Done.

 5. Tap outside the folder area to return to the Home screen.
 6. Drag any additional apps that you want in the folder onto the folder.
 7. Click the Home button to exit Edit mode and complete the new folder.
How to add apps to folders on iPhone or iPad
 1. Go to your Home screen.
 2. Touch and hold on the app you want to add to your folder until all apps begin to jiggle and you enter Edit mode.
 3. While continuing to hold your finger down on the app, drag it to the folder.
 4. Release your finger to drop it into the folder.

 5. Drag any additional apps that you want onto that folder.
 6. Click the Home button to exit Edit mode.
How to remove a folder from your iPhone or iPad
 1. Go to your Home screen and tap the folder in question.
 2. Touch and hold on an app in the folder to enter Edit mode.
 3. Drag all apps out of the folder, at which point it will disappear.

The 2017 Porsche 911 plans to use Apple's CarPlay ove...

The 2017 Porsche 911 will officially support Apple's CarPlay system, but a new report claims that it won't be using the rival Android Auto, reportedly due to Google's data collecting requirements.
According to Motor Trend:

As part of the agreement an automaker would have to enter with Google, certain pieces of data must be collected and mailed back to Mountain View, California. Stuff like vehicle speed, throttle position, coolant and oil temp, engine revs—basically Google wants a complete OBD2 dump whenever someone activates Android Auto. Not kosher, says Porsche. Obviously, this is "off the record," but Porsche feels info like that is the secret sauce that makes its cars special. Moreover, giving such data to a multi-billion dollar corporation that's actively building a car, well, that ain't good, either.

By contrast, Motor Trend claims that CarPlay will only send data about the car's movement back to Apple. We have some doubts over this, primarily because Android Auto is contained on your smartphone and projects itself to the compatible in-car system. Porsche is also owned by the *** (Volkswagen Audi Group), some of whose other brands have already committed to and started offering Android Auto. So whatever is going on is clearly not coming from the very top.

Apple has debuted a new set of Apple Watch ads, showing off various ways the wearable can be used over the course of 6 videos. Each video in the set keeps things fairly short at just 15 seconds, highlighting the various little conveniences of the Apple Watch set to a plain background an upbeat music.

The first two ads, "Sing" and "Beat," showcase the Apple Watch's audio message and heart rate tracking features, respectively, while "Cycle" and "Ride" focus on its fitness and navigation prowess. Lastly, we have "Date" and "Sprinkle," which have the messaging and Apple Pay features featuring prominently.

Overall, each ad is a fun little peek into what the Apple Watch can do, and the ads are worth a look if you have a spare couple of minutes, so be sure to check them out in the embed below.

Apple comments on YiSpecter malware

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News

Apple has provided the following statement to iMore in regards to the YiSpecter malware, which made headlines earlier today despite its incredibly minimal risk to any prudent iPhone or iPad owner.

"This issue only impacts users on older versions of iOS who have also downloaded malware from untrusted sources," an Apple spokesperson told iMore. "We addressed this specific issue in iOS 8.4 and we have also blocked the identified apps that distribute this malware. We encourage customers to stay current with the latest version of iOS for the latest security updates. We also encourage them to only download from trusted sources like the App Store and pay attention to any warnings as they download apps."

We'll do a full explainer, but it's about what anyone would expect: You'd have to be so desperate for a sketchy "video player" or other untrusted app download, that you not only ignore the protections built into iOS, but actively go out of your way to circumvent them.

Update to iOS 9, which greatly strengthens to the Enterprise certificate trust system, and don't download untrusted apps from illegitimate sources in China, and you'll be just fine.

Once again, the bigger threat was the irresponsible headlines trying to get attention through scaring people.
