iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writ...

<span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text/html' width='704' height='426' src='http://www.youtube.c...de=transparent'frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'></iframe></span>
<p>We first read about this quite some time ago. It was nothing out of the ordinary at the time: guy has his iPhone stolen, photos from the stolen phone show up in his iCloud account, social media employed to try to track down the person using the phone. But Matt Stopera’s story ended up far from ordinary.</p>
<p>He’s blogged the whole story in great detail on <a href="http://www.buzzfeed....zfeed</em></a>,but here are the edited highlights …</p>
<p>A lot of the photos that show up featured a guy and an orange tree.</p>
<p><img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372390" src="https://9to5mac.file...16-1.png?w=704"alt="enhanced-22677-1427588916-1" /></p>
<p>Like, seriously, a <em>lot</em> of photos of him and his tree – somewhere in China.</p>
<p><img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372391" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/2.png?w=704"alt="2" /></p>
<p>Stopera posted the story to <i>Buzzfeed</i> and within hours someone translated the piece into Chinese and posted it on Weibo, the local equivalent of Twitter. The guy got termed Brother Orange, and people in China started trying to track him down.</p>
<p><img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372392" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/3.png?w=704"alt="3" /></p>
<p>He ended up as the number one trending topic on Weibo.</p>
<p><img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372393" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/4.png?w=704"alt="4" /></p>
<p>Brother Orange was identified – he didn’t steal the phone, but bought it secondhand in good faith. The two of them started chatting, eventually daily. Weibo described it as a romance. Eventually, Stopera suggested he fly to China for the two of them to meet up.</p>
<p><img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372395" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/5.png?w=704"alt="5" /></p>
<p>Stopera was recognized on the plane by a ‘fan’ and started to realize he may really be famous there. He arrived at the airport to a huge crowd, and cameras.</p>
<p><img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372397" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/6.jpg?w=704"alt="6" /></p>
<p>There were cameras wherever they went.</p>
<p><img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372398" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/7.jpg?w=704"alt="7" /></p>
<p>People everywhere kept giving him phones. There was even a press conference.</p>
<p><img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372399" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/8.jpg?w=704"alt="8" /></p>
<p>He doesn’t seem quite sure what it’s for, but thinks he went on to do some product endorsements.</p>
<p><img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372400" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/9.png?w=704"alt="9" /></p>
<p>Followed by a Weibo press conference, a tour of Beijing, a full-on bromance and now a forthcoming documentary. Crazy stuff … all because of the iPhone.</p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/c.../'>General</a>,<a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/ios-devices/'>iOS Devices</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/brother-orange/'>Brother Orange</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/china/'>china</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/icloud/'>icloud</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/iphone/'>iPhone</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/matt-stopera/'>Matt Stopera</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/stolen-iphone/'>Stolen iPhone</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/stolen-iphone-china/'>Stolen iPhone China</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/372388/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=372388&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><p>Check out <a href="http://9to5mac.com">9to5Mac</a> for more breaking coverage of <a href="http://9to5mac.com/category/ios-devices/">iOS Devices</a>, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/iphone/">iPhone</a>, and <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/icloud/">icloud</a>.</p><p>What do you think? <strong><a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/04/01/brother-orange/#comments">Discuss "iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China&nbsp;(Video)" with our community.</a></strong></p><div class="inlinead"><a href="http://rss.buysellads.com/click.php?z=1288305&k=0d0633b70e3c2bda246a715efcc79f88&a=1427900970&c=1931797427" target="_blank"><img src="http://rss.buysellads.com/img.php?z=1288305&k=0d0633b70e3c2bda246a715efcc79f88&a=1427900970&c=1931797427" border="0" alt="" /></a></div>

Car Audio Installer Creates Custom Entertainment System U...

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News
Before heading on a road trip from Los Angeles, California to Phoenix, Arizona with his family to watch spring training baseball, MacRumors forum member and car audio installer Wesley, otherwise known as MrMacMini, decided that some entertainment would be needed for the five-hour drive. With a love for both Apple products and car audio installations, he decided to create his own entertainment system based on a pair of iPads, an Apple TV and Alpine headrest monitors in his 2011 Toyota Sienna.

Toyota-Sienna-iPad-800x450.jpg
The custom in-car entertainment system consists of a removable iPad mini retrofitted into the vehicle's dashboard, alongside two discontinued Alpine PKG-M780 headrest monitors in the rear that mirror an iPad 2 over AirPlay using a third-generation Apple TV. The setup also includes a 1TB Seagate Wireless Plus hard drive and Alpine CDE-HD149BT head unit for AM, FM, HD Radio, CDs and Bluetooth streaming audio. Wesley also purchased factory brackets to mount the head unit in the factory rear DVD player location.
"The iPad mini sends the sound via Bluetooth to the Alpine head unit. I opted for keeping a head unit so that I can still use the steering controls and have access the radio, in case 1 day I forget the iPad at home," explains Wesley. "The rear screens run independent. My daughters can watch anything they want via the Apple TV and the 1TB wireless Seagate. If we all want to want to watch the same thing, I have it set up so that I can AirPlay from the iPad mini to the Apple TV and have the sound feed back through the Alpine head unit."
Equipment Used
  1. iPad mini 3 running iOS 8.1 (jailbroken) — in the dash, fully removable
  2. iPad 2 — used for rear monitors
  3. Apple TV 3 — used for rear monitors
  4. Alpine CDE-HD149BT — AM/FM/HD Radio/CD/BT streaming audio head unit
  5. Alpine PKG-M780 (discontinued) - Dual 7" headrest monitors
  6. Seagate Wireless Plus - 1TB HDD
A complete gallery of before and after photos, including pictures of the individual parts and assembly process, can be found within the discussion forums. For those without the DIY savviness to create their own in-car entertainment system, Alpine has partnered with Apple as an official maker of aftermarket CarPlay systems, which bring Maps, Messages, Phone, Music and Siri to the dashboard, for between $700 to $1400 depending on the unit.

Toyota-Apple-Entertainment-System-800x45
Given that certain car manufacturers are only now beginning to roll out CarPlay support in select new vehicles, and the expensive price tag of aftermarket systems by Alpine and Pioneer, this custom Apple-powered entertainment system could be a more affordable, not to mention cool, alternative for those that may have an iPad or two kicking around the house. If you have any Apple-related DIY projects, past or present, be sure to let us know by sending us a tip.mf.gif

Latest Apple service outage affecting App Store & iTu...

Update: The maintenance lasted about half an hour and is now complete with all services restored according to the system status dashboard.

Apple’s system status dashboard is reporting an ongoing service disruption for multiple store services “due to scheduled maintenance.” Apple’s message says service unavailability may affect all users. Specifically, the maintenance is impacting the App Store, Apple TV, iBooks Store, iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Store, and Mac App Store services.

Unlike recent Apple service outages, the service disruption is intentional as part of scheduled maintenance, although some users are reporting iCloud syncing issues and iCloud Mail delays not acknowledged by the system status dashboard. A widespread outage last month prompted Apple to publicly apologizeto customers for the service interruption.

The maintenance is possibly related to the upcoming Apple Watch launch scheduled for April 24th. Apple started releasing the first set of Apple Watch apps to the App Store last week. Yesterday the company opened WatchKit app submissionto all delivers in time to have the new set of apps ready for the Watch’s launch later this month.screen-shot-2015-04-01-at-12-11-46-pm.pn
