Apple Launches Worldwide 'Shot on iPhone 6' Ad Ca...

Apple has launched a worldwide "Shot on iPhone 6" advertising campaign involving 77 photographers, 70 cities and 24 countries, with iPhone 6 photography to be featured in magazines, newspapers, billboards, transit posters and more. The large-scale marketing initiative has started rolling out in several countries across the world this week, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Thailand, Malaysia, Tokyo and United Arab Emirates.

A number of "Shot on iPhone 6" advertisements have begun surfacing on Twitter and Instagram over the past few days, with spots appearing on the back cover of The New Yorker magazine, horizontal posters in London's Euston Square subway station and in the Malaysian city of Bangsar, billboards in Los Angeles and Toronto, the side of a tall skyscraper in Dubai and more.

The photography campaign began with Apple promoting a world gallery of photos taken with the iPhone 6 on its homepage over the weekend, including photo apps such as Instagram, Snapseed, VSCO Cam, Filterstorm Neue, Camera+ and Adobe Photoshop Express used for editing and filtering. The majority of photos shown provide scenic views of the outdoors, ranging from mountains and deserts to lakes and waterfalls.mf.gif

As part of its Shot on iPhone 6 campaign promoting iPhone photography, Apple is now hanging billboard advertisements around the world. The ads feature the photographs in full bleed with a simple ‘Shot on iPhone 6′ tagline. The posters are going up around the world, including some dramatic large billboards on the side of skyscrapers. Pictured above is one such poster (photo taken by Jimmy Grewal on Twitter) being setup on a skyscraper in Dubai.

In total, the campaign will showcase 77 different individual’s images spanning 24 countries. Users on Twitter have been posting sightings of these ads from all over the world …

Apple launched this campaign on Sunday, conveniently timed to coincide with Samsung’s Galaxy S6 announcement. You can see the full range of photography, and the apps that were used to make them, on Apple’s website. The apps used comprise the iOS Camera app (obviously), VSCO Cam, Instagram, Filterstorm Neue and Snapseed.

iCloud Photo Library: What You Need to Know [Mac Blog]

With today's launch of the <a href="http://www.macrumors...ilable/">publicbeta of OS X 10.10.3</a> and the new Photos app for Mac, a number of users are now getting their first tastes of Apple's replacement for iPhoto and Aperture. The release will also complete the rollout of Apple's cross-platform iCloud Photo Library service, offering users an easy way to keep all of their photos stored in the cloud and synced across their devices. Various pieces of the service have been in beta since iOS 8.0 was made available to developers last June. <br/> <br/> <h2>What Is iCloud Photo Library?</h2> <br/> While Apple has offered some iCloud photo services such as Photo Streams for some time, iCloud Photo Library is a new service still in beta that moves the user's entire photo and video library into the cloud. The service is part of Apple's push to make it as easy as possible for users to switch among Mac and iOS devices throughout the day, making the user's photos are available on all of their devices and ensuring any changes get quickly synced across devices. <br/> <br/> <img src="http://cdn.macrumors.com/article-new/2015/03/icloud_photo_library.jpg" alt="icloud_photo_library" width="1187" height="583" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-440383" /> <br/> Initially planned to launch as part of iOS 8.0, Apple <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2014/09/12/apple-demotes-icloud-photo-library-beta/">pushed the service back to beta</a> ahead of the public release as the company continued to refine the service and work on cross-platform capabilities. The Mac portion was also not ready for the public release of OS X Yosemite last October, but with the new Photos app for Mac ready for launch, all of the pieces are falling into place for iCloud Photo Library. <br/> <!--more--> <br/> <h2>Turning on iCloud Photo Library</h2> <br/> - <b>iOS 8.1 or later</b>: Open the Settings app and head to the iCloud section. Make sure you're logged in, and access the Photos section, where you'll find a toggle for iCloud Photo Library. This option can also be accessed through the Photos & Camera section of Settings. <br/> <br/> - <b>OS X 10.10.3</b>: Open System Preferences and head to the iCloud pane. If you're logged in, you'll see a list of the various iCloud services. Hit the "Options..." button next to Photos, and you'll see a window where you can turn on iCloud Photo Library. You can also manage settings within the Preferences section of the new Photos app directly. <br/> <br/> - <b>iCloud.com</b>: Photos stored in iCloud Photo Library are also accessible through Apple's web-based <a href="http://www.icloud.com">iCloud.com</a> service. Turning on My Photo Stream on a device with iCloud Photo Library is enabled allows the device to import Photo Stream photos from other non-iCloud devices and also send new photos out to My Photo Stream for display on those devices. <br/> <br/> <h2>Using iCloud Photo Library</h2> <br/> Once you understand that iCloud Photo Library stores and syncs photos across devices, usage is very straightforward and it behaves very much like a local photo library stored on the user's machine. Users can freely manage, edit, and save their photos as they have always done, with the added bonus of that work automatically appearing wherever they have iCloud Photo Library enabled. The original photos always remain stored in iCloud, making it easy to revert any edits made on a device. <br/> <br/> <center><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/a2o3Axm5x04?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></center> <br/> As with a local photo library, users can include photos from any source, making iCloud Photo Library more than the familiar Photo Streams of images taken on their devices. Photos and videos of a wide range of types from any source can be added to the user's library on one device, and they will sync to all other devices. <br/> <br/> One important consideration when deciding whether or not to use iCloud Photo Library is that it is an all-or-none proposition on a given device unless the user chooses to use multiple photo libraries on OS X. With a single photo library, there is no option to sync only some photos while the remainder remain stored only locally, so for example, users can not opt to have only their iOS device photos synced to their Mac via iCloud Photo Library but not have their full library of photos in the Photos app for Mac synced to iCloud and the user's other devices unless they want to manage multiple libraries. <br/> <br/> <h2>Pricing</h2> <br/> iCloud Photo Library taps into a user's iCloud account storage, which is also used for iCloud Drive document storage, device backups, and more. iCloud users receive 5 GB of storage for free, but users who wish to back up their devices to iCloud frequently find they need more than that, and iCloud Photo Library will only increase the need for additional storage. <br/> <br/> Apple offers several paid storage tiers for iCloud, priced on a monthly basis and ranging from 20 GB to 1 TB. The lowest paid plan at 20 GB costs $0.99/month in the U.S., with Apple also offering a 200 GB plan for $3.99/month, a 500 GB plan for $9.99/month, and a 1 TB plan for $19.99/month. Even the high-end 1 TB plan may not be enough for some users who have a lot of photos, requiring them to either archive some photos outside of the service or simply opt to not use iCloud Photo Library at all. <br/> <br/> If you fill up your iCloud storage allotment, new photos and videos will no longer be uploaded to iCloud, and libraries will no longer be synced across devices. In order to restore iCloud Photo Library functionality, users will need to either upgrade to a larger storage plan or reduce storage usage by manually deleting certain photos or other files from iCloud. <br/> <br/> <h2>Turning Off iCloud Photo Library</h2> <br/> So what if you've turned on iCloud Photo Library and later decide you don't want to use it anymore, either for a specific device or across all devices? On a specific device, iCloud Photo Library can be disabled the same it was turned on, through the iCloud portion of the Settings app on iOS device or System Preferences or Photos preferences on a Mac. If you are currently storing optimized versions of your photos, your system will give you the opportunity to download the full-resolution photos from iCloud, at which point you will have a complete local photo library on your device. <br/> <br/> If you prefer to turn off iCloud Photo Library entirely, you can head to the Manage Storage section of iCloud settings either in the Settings app on an iOS device or System Preferences on a Mac. In that section, you can choose to Disable and Delete iCloud Photo Library, after which point you will have 30 days to download your library to at least one device before it is removed entirely. <br/> <br/> <h2>Wrap-up</h2> <br/> iCloud Photo Library represents one of Apple's latest efforts to streamline the experience of using multiple devices, many of which have been bundled under the "Continuity" umbrella. While remaining separate, iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite integrate the user experience with features such as Handoff, which allows users to pick up right where they left off on composing an email, browsing the Internet, and more when switching devices; Instant Hotspot, which lets users easily tap into their iPhone's cellular connection to provide an Internet connection for an iPad or Mac with no configuration needed; and convenient features for answering phone calls and carrying on SMS conversations right from a Mac or iPad. <br/> <br/> Many of these Continuity features tap into iCloud as a method for linking various devices, and iCloud Photo Library takes that one step further to ensure the users' photos are available regardless of which device they are currently on. Upcoming Steve Jobs Book Promises 'Sensational' N...

becomingstevejobs-250x410.jpgThere's a new Steve Jobs book set to be published later this month, penned by Brent Schlender, a reporter who interviewed Jobs several times throughout his life and became close to him, and Rick Tetzeli, Executive Editor at Fast Company. Called Becoming Steve Jobs, the book aims to go beyond existing myths and stereotypes about Jobs, giving a look at a man who was only human, who "wrestled with his failings and learned to maximize his strength over time."

The book explores the story of how Steve Jobs made the transformation from an arrogant young man exiled from Apple to the visionary leader that skyrocketed Apple to fame. Schlender and Tetzeli interviewed many of Steve Jobs' friends, family, and inner circle, to get access to never-before-told stories. Tim Cook, Jony Ive, Eddy Cue, Ed Catmull, John Lasseter, and Robert Iger all contributed to the book. It also draws on the experiences Schlender had with Jobs in interviews across many years.

Schlender and Tetzeli make clear that Jobs's astounding success at Apple was far more complicated than simply picking the right products: he became more patient, he learned to trust his inner circle, and discovered the importance of growing the company incrementally rather than only shooting for dazzling game-changing products. .

Daring Fireball's John Gruber received an advanced copy of Becoming Steve Jobs and called it "the book about Steve Jobs that the world deserves." According to Gruber, it's an accurate retelling of the life of Jobs, with a "significant amount of new reporting. Some stories, he writes, "are going to be sensational."

The book is smart, accurate, informative, insightful, and at times, utterly heartbreaking. Schlender and Tetzeli paint a vivid picture of Jobs the man, and also clearly understand the industry in which he worked. They also got an astonishing amount of cooperation from the people who knew Jobs best: colleagues past and present from Apple and Pixar -- particularly Tim Cook -- and his widow, Laurene Powell Jobs.

Nearly eight years have passed since Apple released the first-generation Apple TV, a product originally hyped as “something really special” but quickly demoted to a “hobby” after initial sales fizzled. The second-generation version arrived with much less fanfare in late 2010, and the modestly tweaked third-generation modelgot a mere five-minute launch at a March event three years ago. Since then, there’s been plenty of evidence that Apple was working on updated hardware, a major partnership with cable companies, and major new content deals, but apart from the quiet addition of new channels, nothing’s actually happened.

Since total Apple TV sales remain soft by comparison with Apple’s other product lines, next week’s fashion-focused and celebrity-packed Apple Watch special event would be a great opportunity to launch an updated Apple TV to a broader audience. The current-generation Apple TV is older than its predecessor was when Apple replaced it, and there are at least 10 software and hardware tweaks that could fundamentally improve the Apple TV experience. 1. Unified Search. The absence of an Apple TV-wide, unified search feature is increasingly hurting the growth potential of the device. With every additional channel Apple allows onto the device’s main menu, the number of doorways leading to content increases; once you enter a doorway to a content aggregator such as Yahoo Screen, KOR-TV, or Hulu, you’re confronted with even more possible paths to take. It’s gotten to the point where users can spend as much time navigating through menus as actually watching shows. A unified search feature — at a minimum including titles, cast/crew names, and description field searches — would dramatically improve the Apple TV in a flash. It would be even better with…

Better (If Alternate) UI Navigation. Even if we accept that the Apple TV’s packed-in Apple Remote is a necessary first-level menu navigation tool, that doesn’t preclude Apple from leveraging iPhones, iPads, or iPod touches for an alternate navigation scheme. It could be voice searches, but it could also be a mirroring of the Apple TV UI on the iOS device’s screen. Back in 2007 or even 2010, relying on an iPhone as an input device seemed like a rich man’s luxury, and Apple’s underdeveloped iOS app Remote expanded only a little on the free physical remote. Today, iOS devices are so ubiquitous now that there’s no excuse not to use them more heavily for fully rethought input.

3. Game Controller Support. Video gaming is annually a $100 billion business. Games are the largest individual category in the App Store, representing over 20% of the 1.4 million titles available for download. People love to play games on their TVs, and love to play games on their iOS devices. The lack of proper Apple TV support for this has been a glaring omission for years, and although there are now Bluetooth iOS game controllers, Apple hasn’t tied them directly into the Apple TV. That needs to change.

4. More Horsepower. The single-core A5 inside the Apple TV is now several generations behind the A7 and A8 devices most of Apple’s customers are using. In theory, that doesn’t mean much — the Apple TV doesn’t need to run all the same apps as an iPad — but if the Apple TV is going to handle next-gen AirPlay Mirroring and streaming, play current-generation iOS games, or offer features such as Siri and FaceTime, it will need more horsepower.

5. More Memory. In addition to more video RAM, the Apple TV could really use additional flash storage space to hold games and more complex apps. Some months ago, Apple’s web site began to use the phrase “Starting at $99″ rather than “Only $99″ for the Apple TV’s price. This typically only happens when Apple offers more than one model, and most of the time when those models differ in storage capacity.

What Apple TV Should Get, Too

6. A La Carte Cable Channels. This one’s been rumored for the past year and seems inevitable given HBO’s very-near-term plans to offer direct subscription-based access to its content, but the killer app for Apple TV is still great content. People want to pay for that content (if at all) on a monthly, all-you-can-eat basis rather than by the individual episode. Apple knows this and needs to make it happen.

7. A Camera. Either packed in or as an accessory, a FaceTime camera for video calling is a natural addition to the Apple TV. Gesture controls like Xbox One? Augmented reality like PlayStation 4? Both are optional at best, and probably not worth having. But video calling should not be restricted to iOS devices and Macs.

8. 4K Support. This is in the “should” category rather than the “must” category solely because Apple so infrequently updates the Apple TV — at the current rate, a 2015 update probably wouldn’t be tweaked until 2018. Ultra HD 4K televisions aren’t ubiquitous yet, but they’ll grow in popularity over the next few years, so Apple TV hardware support for the standard would be forward-thinking.

9. Better Wireless. The Apple TV would really benefit from 802.11ac support, particularly for smoother AirPlay streaming from 802.11ac-compatible iOS devices. Without improved Wi-Fi (and even with it), streaming 4K video is going to be a challenge.

10. A HomeKit App. Apple has already announced that the Apple TV will in some way be involved in managing HomeKit accessories. An app for HomeKit accessories — along with a proper interface for controlling them — is even more inevitable (though less exciting) than support for Apple TV games. That said, the latest reports suggest that HomeKit accessories won’t be ready to ship until later in 2015, perhaps around the same time as WWDC in June. If the Apple TV is going to be a part of the system, this could make a later-in-the-year update more likely.

How will this new book differ from everything that has already been published about Jobs including his authorized biography from Walter Isaacson? The book is loaded with interviews, for starters, including ones from Apple executives like Tim Cook, Jony Ive, and Eddy Cue (so don’t expect any pen throwing).

If you're not an Apple developer and you'd like to try the new Photos app for OS X before it launches, now's your chance. Apple has added the 10.10.3 update to its public beta program for OS X, and the update brings Photos (and a bunch of new emoji) along with it.

Photos is a Mac analog for the iOS app of the same name, and it's meant to replace iPhoto as the basic built-in photo app to serve most users' needs. It will also be replacing Aperture, which Apple will stop offering when the final version of Photos is released. Power users will find that it lacks many advanced features, so current Aperture users should begin evaluating alternative software like Adobe Lightroom if they want software that will continue to be supported.

You should always take precautions before you install beta software, and that's doubly true here since you're updating your OS and importing your existing iPhoto libraries into a brand-new program. Make sure you have recent backups of your OS and of your photo libraries in case something goes wrong.

Apple will begin allowing prospective customers to test out in-ear headphones prior to purchase within Apple Stores, according to several employees. Due to sanitation concerns, Apple has been reluctant to allowing customers to try out in-ear headphones, but a new solution called Demo Kits will solve this problem. Beginning this week, when a customer is interested in purchasing in-ear headphones, an Apple Store employee will have the ability to create a custom Demo Kit that holds up to six different models of in-ear headphones. These kits will include a fresh pair ear tips so that the try on process is sanitary…

The customer will be able to keep the ear tips regardless if they purchase the headphones. The customer can then plug the headphones into their iPhone or iPod to sample the quality before making their purchase decision. Apple told employees that 51% of surveyed customers have said that they would like to test out in-ear headphones prior to purchasing, so this move will likely spur an increase of in-ear headphone sales via Apple Store. Of course, with the upcoming Bluetooth Apple Watch, Apple will market Bluetooth headphones alongside the device for music and fitness applications.

The following headphones are available to try out with Demo Kits (Apple’s prices listed, but linked to better prices at Amazon): RHA MA450i ($49.95), urBeats ($99.95), Beats Tour ($149.95), JayBird BlueBuds X($169.95), PowerBeats 2 Wireless ($199.95), and the Bose QC20i ($299.95).
