In the second half of The Telegraph’s interview with Tim Cook, Apple CEO Tim Cook has reaffirmed his position on privacy. Cook says that whilst currently consumers do not understand the ramifications of sharing their data with third-parties, “one day they will”.
Moreover, Cook openly objects to governments that say data sharing is required to combat crime and terrorism. There has been pressure for tech companies to offer back-doors into encryption mechanisms, but a clear implication of this interview is that Apple will strongly oppose this view. Cook describes privacy as a ‘basic human right’.
http://rss.buysellad...008&c=614955361

Cook disagrees fundamentally. “None of us should accept that the government or a company or anybody should have access to all of our private information. This is a basic human right. We all have a right to privacy. We shouldn’t give it up. We shouldn’t give in to scare-mongering or to people who fundamentally don’t understand the details.”

Although Cook believes that terrorism is bad (“these people shouldn’t exist”), he rejects the idea that privacy policies needs to be weakened to support counter-terrorism efforts. Cook says that removing layers of encryption will mean that the public’s private information will “inevitably be taken” and that terrorist effort will encrypt their own communications regardless of company oversight.

“Terrorists will encrypt. They know what to do. If we don’t encrypt, the people we affect [by cracking down on privacy] are the good people. They are the 99.999pc of people who are good.”

The interview concludes with Cook reiterating what Apple’s stance is in this area. “You are not our product”, in regard to health data, purchase history (referring to Apple Pay) and even ‘relatively minor pieces of information’ which can be built up into a ‘trove of data’, according to Cook.

“We don’t make money selling your information to somebody else. We don’t think you want that. We don’t want to do that. It’s not in our values system to do that. Could we make a lot of money doing that? Of course. But life isn’t about money, life is about doing the right thing. This has been a core value of our company for a long time.”

You can read the full interview on The Telegraph’s website. The first half of the newspaper’s interview was posted yesterday and covered some new details about the Apple Watch.

Chinese Android phone takes copying Apple to another level

Forget Comcast, ZTE takes the cake with the most blatant Apple-ripoff-of-the-month award. The Chinese company’s latest handset, the Blade S6, is clearly… inspired by the iPhone. Case Logic Video Review: Hands-On With the Ibira MacBook...

<a href="https://www.caselogi.../en-us/us">CaseLogic</a> is known its line of backpacks, cases, and other storage accessories, all of which are priced affordably, making it quite popular with people looking for inexpensive but quality solutions for carrying around their devices. <br/> <br/> We met up with Case Logic at CES this year, where the company had a large booth showcasing all of its products, including the Ibira backpack, one of its newest offerings. We went hands-on with the Ibira backpack in our latest video review, so check it out to see what we thought. <br/> <br/> <center><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MDjE4SY166Y" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></center> <br/> The Ibira is a lightweight, slim backpack but we were impressed with what it was able to hold. We fit in a MacBook, an iPad, an Apple keyboard, an iPhone, several chargers and accessories, a water bottle, and several notebooks. Build wise, the backpack is made of a high quality material that feels like it will stand up to heavy usage, but the straps were a bit too thin and could use more padding to be comfortable. <br/> <br/> Case Logic's Ibira Backpack is available in black and anthracite from the <a href="https://www.caselogic.com/en-us/us/products/laptop/backpacks/ibira-backpack-_-ibir_-_115_-_black">Case Logic website</a> for $29.99.<img width='1' height='1' src='http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/35070/f/648326/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/mf.gif' border='0'/><br clear='all'/><br/><br/><a href="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166654938/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/rc/1/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166654938/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><a href="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166654938/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/rc/2/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166654938/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><a href="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166654938/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/rc/3/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166654938/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166654938/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/a2.htm"><img src="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166654938/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/a2.img" border="0"/></a><img width="1" height="1" src="http://pi.feedsportal.com/r/222166654938/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/43df7ad5/sc/28/a2t.img" border="0"/><div class="feedflare">

Review: Sengled’s Pulse system combines LED lights and JB...

Sengled’s Pulse LED light system is definitely a product I never thought would be a thing. The Pulse series is a system of LED lights with built-in speakers. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s something I never thought would need to exist. That being said, because it was so unique I figured it would be worth checking out and to my surprise, it’s actually pretty cool…

img.php?z=1288305&k=0d0633b70e3c2bda246a

The Pulse system comes as a starter kit which includes a master bulb and a satellite bulb. This alone will allow you to have a stereo speaker system, but you can connect up to seven satellite bulbs (purchased separately) to one master bulb. The bulbs will fit most anywhere with a standard light socket, but they are a little wide so smaller lamps may not work well. Also, each bulb is rated to last up to 25,000 hours and produce a warm-toned brightness of 600 lumen.

Setting up the Pulse system is extremely simple. The connection is made to the master bulb via Bluetooth on your iOS (or Android) device. From there, it will automatically detect and sync up with the satellite bulb. The light and audio settings can be controlled from the Pulse app which can be downloaded free of charge.

The Pulse system will work as traditional Bluetooth speakers, but there’s something interesting about the vibe/ambiance that comes along with playing music through speakers in a lighting fixture. It’s much different from anything I’ve experienced. I have this system installed as two of my overhead lights in the kitchen and it fills the room with music in a very different way.

The best way to describe this system is to show it in action. Check out our review video of Sengled’s Pulse systembelow:

The 13 watt speakers (at 8 ohms) inside feature JBL by Harmon technology and I found them to be quite pleasant to listen to. They have a 100Hz-20kHz frequency response and the audio quality is pretty good (for a light bulb). I was surprised at how much bass was produced. Another thing to note is that the lighting fixture can change the sound output as well. Depending on the size or shape of lamp, the sound will slightly vary because of how the sound waves bounce around.

As far as the app goes, its functionality is basic, but definitely gets the job done. With the Pulse app, you’ll have the ability to dim the lights (simultaneously or individually), turn them on/off, adjust the speaker output, switch between a mono/stereo signal, and designate which light gets the left/right output. There’s also a handful of built-in EQ presets that will work independently from the EQ presets found in the Music settings on iOS and the app has the ability to add new satellite bulbs. For a detailed look at the app, check out the above video.

The Sengled Pulse system starts at $179.99 for the starter kit. Given the pricing of other smart LED light systems, that’s not a crazy asking price, but it will definitely be a turnoff to some consumers. Satellite bulbs can be purchased for $79.99 each and as mentioned, you can add up to seven of them to one master bulb.

The Pulse system seems to be proprietary so don’t expect it to work with any other smart wireless systems or platforms. Overall though, there’s not much else to say here. These are LED light bulbs with built-in speakers and after using them for a couple of weeks, I think it’s a fantastic idea. The only real downside comes with the entry price.

Q Branch is out with a big update to Vesper, the alternative note-taking app for iOS.

Vesper 2.005 adds landscape support to the app for iPhone so you can now browse, manage, and create notes outside of portrait orientation.

The 2.005 update also includes Vesper for iPad, the first time the note-taking app has been available with a version optimized for the tablet. Vesper for iPad features the same support for landscape use as the iPhone, and Q Branch’s syncing feature keeps notes between both apps up-to-date.

Vesper, which first launched in 2013 with the help of Apple blogger John Gruber and company, varies from Apple’s built-in Notes app on iOS as Vesper features a tagging system for sorting through notes, archiving old notes, and a syncing system that doesn’t rely on iCloud.

Vesper is available for $2.99 on the App Store. The update is available for free for existing users.

VLC for iOS back on the App Store, OS X app updated along...

VideoLAN has today launched several updates to VLC across its apps on iOS, Android, OS X, and every other platform where the app is available, marking the first time that the company has pushed such a massive coordinated release and the re-release of the iOS app. The new versions (with the main app numbered 2.2.0), include several features across the various platforms, and VLC says it took more than a year of volunteer work to put them together…

img.php?z=1288305&k=0d0633b70e3c2bda246a

Among many others, one of the headlining features in this version is that VLC now automatically detects vertical videos and rotates them accordingly on some platforms. The new version includes other new features like the ability to resume video playback from where it left off on the desktop, much improved support for UltraHD video codecs, new hardware acceleration on some platforms, and new compatibility with a “very large number” of unusual codecs. (After all, that’s what VLC is known for, right?)

On iOS, today’s release (individually numbered 2.4.1) marks the return of the app to the App Store after disappearing around the time iOS 8 was released. The most important thing to note here is that support for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus has been added, but the update also includes detection of external subtitles, support for streaming from Google Drive, media library search, UI and stability improvements, and the usual bug fixes among many other changes.

On Android, today’s release (individually numbered 1.1.0) is the first non-beta release for the platform. The update features a new aesthetic design that aligns with Google’s Material Design philosophy, a port of the app’s APIs to Android 5.0, gamepad controller support for navigation, support for pull to refresh, the ability to show videos as a list in portrait, and over 60 bug fixes.

A few platforms, including Android TV, Windows Phone, and Windows RT, are getting their very first public release today. The Android TV app is particularly notable—it’s very barebones in its current form, but surely development will continue.

VLC also took a moment today to announce that they’re working actively on version 3.0.0 for release “later this year.” “We’re working on many new features for VLC 3.0.0 to finish what we’ve started here,” Jean-Baptiste Kempf, president of VideoLAN said.

Here’s the changelog, encompassing most of the important new features:

So, what’s new in VLC 2.2.0, codename WeatherWax?

  • Fight the popular vertical video syndrome! VLC automatically detects rotated videos and rotates them using hardware acceleration (on compatible platforms)!
This is supported for MP4/MOV, MKV and raw H264.
  • Resume playback where you left off. Supported on all the mobile versions of VLC for quite some time, it is now available on the desktop.
  • Vastly improved support for UltraHD video codecs like VP9 and H265, including encoding.
  • New hardware acceleration mechanism, GPU 0-copy decoding, faster and implementations for Linux, Android, and Raspberry Pi. (Other OSes will have it in 3.0.0)
  • Extensions: supported since a long time, we now feature an in-app downloader for the desktop, like Firefox
  • Subtitles downloading extension
  • Compatibility with a very large number of unusual codecs
  • Vastly improved compatibility for problematic files in Ogg, MP4, and WMV.
  • Support for Digital Cinema Package to play native movie theater formats.
  • Experimental support of Interactive Menus of BluRays: BD-J
  • On OS X, we’ve updated the interface for Yosemite compatibility.
  • On Android, we rewrote most of the UI to match Google Material Design.
  • This is the first public beta releases of Windows Phone, Window RT and Android TV.
  • It is also the first non-beta release on Android.

And here’s a list of the new versions and links to their respective stores:
