Apple Watch Wins Renowned iF Design Award Before Release...

While Apple Watch could be more than a month away from a public release, it has won a 2015 iF Gold Award from the International Forum (iF) Design in its annual industrial design competition. The jury called the Apple Watch design "an icon".

applewatch.png

The idea of combining classic materials such as leather and metal with state-of-the-art technology to create a very individual fashion accessory has resulted in a delightful product offering a holistic user experience. The Apple Watch scores highly for each design detail and is an altogether extraordinary piece of design. For us, it is already an icon.

Apple Watch was one of only two telecommunication products out of 64 recipients to earn the "Gold" designation. Out of the 1,624 products recognized, only 75 of them received a Gold Award.

The iF has been hosting its renowned design awards since 1953, and its jury evaluates products on a set of criteria that includes workmanship, choice of materials, environmental friendliness, design quality, safety, brand value, ergonomics, workmanship, degree of innovation and functionality.

Apple has won a number of iF Design Awards, for major products like iPhone 6, iPad Air and iMac to accessories like EarPods and Apple Keyboard. In total, Apple has won 118 iF Design Awards, but only 44 have earned a "Gold" designation, with Apple Watch being the most recent.

The design of Apple Watch is one aspect of the device that Apple has been marketing thus far, with design chief Jony Ive talking about the challenge of designing the smart watch and it appearing on fashion magazines in both interior multi-page spreads and cover features.

Apple will provide more information about the Apple Watch at its March 9 media event.mf.gif

Apple considering settlement in A123 Systems employee poa...

Electric car battery manufacturer A123 Systems is currently locked in a lawsuit with Apple over whether the latter  poached employees from the former while building out its Project Titan team. Today Reuters reports that Apple is considering a settlement in the case.

Apple has asked for an extension on the time required to respond to the suit, telling the court that it is currently “exploring a potential resolution.” Of course, it’s hardly unexpected that the company should try to settle out of a potentially costly legal battle.

Apple reportedly wants to launc its electric car by the year 2020, and has been seen driving minivans equipped with cameras and computer equipment around in a few major cities, though that may or may not be related to the project. The electric car project has reportedly been in the works for about a year, with Apple offering big bonuses to Tesla employees who will jump ship and join the project that some say has Apple planning to “give Tesla a run for its money”.

Rumor Suggests 12-Inch Retina MacBook Air Could Launch Du...

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News
Apple could be planning to introduce the much-rumored 12-inch Retina MacBook Air during its March 9 Apple Watch event, according to one site that claims to have sources within Apple. The Michael Report believes Apple will use the event to debut the ultrathin MacBook, which is rumored to have a Retina display and a redesigned chassis.

Many are expecting Apple talk more about the Apple Watch. However, sources familiar with the matter within Apple have exclusively told The Michael Report that Apple plans to unveil the long-awaited Retina MacBook Air at the same event. The Michael Report has independently verified this information to be highly credible.

While there have been no concrete rumors from major sites linking the Retina MacBook Air to Apple's March 9 event, previous rumors have indicated that Apple is planning for a spring release. Apple supplier Quanta is said to have begun mass production of the notebook in January, and KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted a March launch for the MacBook.

15607725144_ef44411b5b_b-800x601.jpgRendering of the 12-inch Retina MacBook Air created by Martin Hajek
When taking these rumors into account, along with the fact that the MacBook Air is due for an update, the introduction of the Retina MacBook Air at Apple's March 9 event does seem like a possibility. It's also possible Apple will introduce new models of the existing 11 and 13-inch MacBook Air at the event -- the last update was in April and there was a rumor suggesting an update in February was imminent. Core M Broadwell chips believed to be appropriate for the 12-inch Retina MacBook have been available since November, and chips appropriate for the standard MacBook Air began shipping in January.

Along with a Retina display, the 12-inch MacBook Air is rumored to come without a fan assembly for silent operation, made possible by the aforementioned Core M chips, and it may also include a revamped trackpad that does not incorporate a mechanical button. It is said to feature smaller bezels in a Retina MacBook Pro-style black, a keyboard that stretches right to the edges of the machine, and speakers that are located above the keyboard.

The Michael Report has a mixed track record when it comes to rumors. The site accurately predicted some design elements of the iPad Air 2, but its predictions may have been based on dummy models that were circulating around the Internet at the time. The site also shared details on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus ahead of their launch, inaccurately calling the iPhone 6 Plus the "iPhone 6L" and suggesting the iPhones would come with quad-core processors and sapphire displays.

More details about what Apple plans to unveil at its Monday, March 9 event may come out through the week. Thus far, many sites have agreed that the focal point of the event will be the Apple Watch, with Apple unveiling new details about the device like its price and its official launch date.mf.gif

Apple Watch wins noted iF Design Gold award before it eve...

The Apple Watch hasn’t shipped yet, but it’s already showing up on fashion magazine covers, and now it’s even winning design awards. The wearable device picked up the iF Design Gold award from the iF International Forum Design. The organization declared that the Cupertino-designed smartwatch is “already an icon.”

It’s not a big surprise that the Apple Watch won this specific award, however. Nearly every Apple product (we couldn’t find the iPhone 4 Bumper on the list) has won one, including most of the iPhone and iPad case the company has produced.

The Apple Watch ships in April in multiple (currently undisclosed) countries. Earlier today the company’s retail plans for pitching the watch to shoppers was revealed exclusively by 9to5Mac.

Analyst Gene Munster guesses Watch pricing, thinks only 1...

<p>Analyst Gene Muster, from Piper Jaffray, has today <a href="http://www.streetins...65.html">posteda report</a> with his predictions about Apple Watch pricing. Munster believes that Apple will improve overall margins through the sale of bands. This makes a lot of sense, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/03/03/apple-watchs-retail-sales-pitch-revealed-3-key-features-switch-to-iphone-focus-on-bands/">especially considering Apple Retail SVP Angela Ahrendts is calling out</a> ‘accessories’ as a key area for retail in the coming months.</p>
<p><span id="more-367561"></span><div class="inlinead"><a href="http://rss.buysellad...54&c=879498016"target="_blank"><img src="http://rss.buysellads.com/img.php?z=1288305&k=0d0633b70e3c2bda246a715efcc79f88&a=1425419454&c=879498016" border="0" alt="" /></a></div></p>
<p>Munster believes that the Apple Watch Sport will cost $349 (no surprises there). He says the Apple Watch — the one made out of stainless steel with a sapphire crystal screen — will cost around $500 with additional bands pushing the average selling price up to $650, which happens to be the current ASP of Apple’s iPhone units. Munster also estimates the Edition will start at $4999, despite general consensus sitting closer to $10,000. Munster is relatively bearish on Apple Watch Edition sales, suggesting that Apple will only sell 10,000 units in the first year to take only a small fraction of the expensive watch market.</p>
<p>Obviously, these numbers are little more than educated guesswork. <strong>Almost like throwing a dart at a dartboard</strong>.</p>
<p>We’ll <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2...ch-debut/">findout for certain on March 9th</a> whether Munster happens to be right. <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/03/02/opinion-apple-tv-should-get-these-10-updates-at-next-weeks-event/">As we discussed earlier</a>, there is also the slim possibility Munster’s claims about a revamped Apple TV offering may finally come true as well.</p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/apple-watch-2/'>Apple Watch</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/ios-devices/'>iOS Devices</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/analyst/'>analyst</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/apple-watch/'>Apple watch</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/dartboard/'>dartboard</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/edition/'>edition</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/gene-munster/'>Gene Munster</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/guesswork/'>guesswork</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/pricing/'>pricing</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/367561/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=367561&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><p>Visit <a href="http://9to5mac.com">9to5Mac</a> to find more special coverage of <a href="http://9to5mac.com/category/ios-devices/">iOS Devices</a>, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/apple-watch/">Apple watch</a>, and <a href="http://9to5mac.com/category/apple-watch-2/">Apple Watch</a>.</p><p>What do you think? <strong><a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/03/03/analyst-gene-munster-guesses-watch-pricing-thinks-only-10000-editions-will-be-sold-in-the-first-year/#comments">Discuss "Analyst Gene Munster guesses Watch pricing, thinks only 10,000 Editions will be sold in the first&nbsp;year" with our community.</a></strong></p>

New Site Offers Interactive Look at Upcoming Apple Watch...

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News
<em>AppAdvice</em> recently launched a new site dedicated to the Apple Watch called <a href="http://watchaware.co...Aware</em></a>,and today a new feature was introduced that showcases upcoming Apple Watch apps in an interesting, interactive way. <br/> <br/> The site's <a href="http://watchaware.com/watch-apps/">Apple Watch Apps section</a> offers a selection of apps that are displayed on an Apple Watch interface, with different views for "Apps," "Glances," and "Notifications." For example, for the upcoming Twitter app, which was shown off at WWDC, <em>WatchAware</em> allows users to click to see both what the app itself will look like and what an incoming notification will look like. <br/> <br/> Many of the apps on the page use imagery from the apps that Apple showcased when the Apple Watch was first announced, so there may be some significant interface changes, but overall, the site gives a good look at what one might expect to see from the different types of Apple Watch experiences developers can create. <br/> <br/> <img src="http://cdn.macrumors.com/article-new/2015/03/watchawareapps-800x441.jpg" alt="watchawareapps" width="800" height="441" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-440565" /> <br/> As outlined in the <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2014/11/18/apple-watchkit-ios-8-2/">WatchKit API provided</a> to developers in November, developers can build Glances, actionable notifications, and Apple Watch apps that are powered by the iPhone. Actionable notifications are notifications that allow users to taken an action or respond directly on their wrists with the Apple Watch, while Glances are somewhat simpler, giving users quick information at a glance like news, weather, and more. <br/> <br/> Apple Watch apps are even more in-depth than notifications and Glances, letting users perform tasks like reading tweets and sending messages. Apps, which are built-into and installed via the iPhone, run entirely on the iPhone, with an interface that's beamed to the Apple Watch. By running apps on the iPhone, Apple is able to conserve battery and provide a seamless experience transitioning from watch to phone. Apple has promised apps that run entirely on the Apple Watch will come later in the year. <br/> <br/> <em><a href="http://watchaware.com/watch-apps/page/1">WatchAware</a></em> currently features popular apps like <em><a href="http://appshopper.com/social-networking/tweetie-2">Twitter</a></em>, <em><a href="http://appshopper.com/social-networking/facebook">Facebook</a></em>, Maps, <a href="http://appshopper.com/travel/american-airlines"><em>American Airlines</em></a>, <em><a href="http://appshopper.com/social-networking/pinterest">Pinterest</a></em>, and <em><a href="http://appshopper.com/navigation/citymapper-london">CityMapper</a></em>, which were featured by Apple at WWDC, but there are also several other apps that have been showcased by developers like <em><a href="http://appshopper.com/utilities/delivery-status-touch">Deliveries</a></em>, <a href="http://appshopper.com/healthcare-fitness/couch-to-5k"><em>Run 5k</em></a>, and <em><a href="http://appshopper.com/productivity/todoist-to-do-list-task-list">Todoist</a></em>. “FREAK” flaw in Android and Apple devices cripples HTTPS...

<p>Security experts have discovered a potentially catastrophic flaw that for more than a decade has made it possible for attackers to decrypt HTTPS-protected traffic passing between Android or Apple devices and hundreds of thousands or millions of websites, including AmericanExpress.com, Bloomberg.com, NSA.gov, and FBI.gov.</p>
<p>In recent days, a scan of more than 14 million websites that support the secure sockets layer or transport layer security protocols found that more than 36 percent of them were vulnerable to the decryption attacks. The exploit takes about seven hours to carry out and costs as little as $100 per site. The so-called FREAK attack—short for Factoring attack on RSA-EXPORT Keys—is possible when an end user with a vulnerable device—currently known to include Android smartphones, iPhones, and Macs running Apple's OS X operating system—connects to a vulnerable HTTPS-protected website. Vulnerable sites are those configured to use a weak cipher that many had presumed had been retired long ago. At the time this post was being prepared, Windows and Linux end-user devices were not believed to be affected.</p>
<p>Attackers who are in a position to monitor traffic passing between vulnerable end users and servers can inject malicious packets into the flow that will cause the two parties to use a weak 512-bit encryption key while negotiating encrypted Web sessions. Attackers can then collect some of the resulting exchange and use cloud-based computing from Amazon or other services to factor the website's underlying private key. From that point on, attackers on a coffee-shop hotspot or other unsecured network can masquerade as the official website, a coup that allows them to read or even modify data as it passes between the site and the end user.</p>
