Apple launches new webpage to detail how it tests accesso...

<p><img title="Apple launches new webpage to detail how it tests accessories sold in its retail stores" class=" size-large wp-image-387920 aligncenter" src="https://9to5mac.file...ng?w=704&h=328"alt="apple-tested-cases" width="704" height="328" /></p>
<p>Yesterday we revealed that Apple was <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2...ies/">revampingthe third-party accessory selection</a> in its retail locations with new boxes designed by Apple itself. Apple has recently <a href="http://store.apple.com/us/accessories/apple-tested-cases">launched a new webpage</a> that showcases the testing that all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch cases are required to go through before they are sold in an Apple Store.</p>
<p><span id="more-387919"></span><div class="inlinead"><a href="http://rss.buysellad...6&c=1911865699"target="_blank"><img src="http://rss.buysellads.com/img.php?z=1288305&k=0d0633b70e3c2bda246a715efcc79f88&a=1436298196&c=1911865699" border="0" alt="" /></a></div></p>
<p>Apple first notes that it analyzes the design of the case to ensure that all ports and buttons are still easily accessible and that the case design is strong enough for day-to-day use. Apple then tests to make sure the case does not interfere with the camera on the iPhone in any way.</p>
<p>Next, Apple says that acoustics are tested for each and every case to ensure that audio, including music, voice calls, and FaceTimes, is unaffected by the case. Apple also tests how the case affects the sensors of an iPhone, including sensors for ambient light, Touch ID, and more. Apple says that the sensors should with the same with the case on or off. Finally, Apple tests the cellular and wireless capabilities of the device with the case on. Also included in this testing is Apple Pay.</p>
<p>Apple has recently been leveraging stricter regulations on iPhone accessory makers. The company recently threatened to ban iPhone and iPad <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2...aks/">accessorymakers that produce cases based on leaks</a>. Apple also recently instituted a new requirement that all cases protect <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2014/12/11/apple-mfi-case-standards/">devices from 1m drops and meet new environmental standards</a>.</p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/ios-devices/'>iOS Devices</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/accessories/'>Accessories</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/accessory/'>accessory</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/apple/'>Apple</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/third-party/'>third-party</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/387919/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=387919&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><p>Visit <a href="http://9to5mac.com">9to5Mac</a> to find more special coverage of <a href="http://9to5mac.com/category/ios-devices/">iOS Devices</a>, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/apple/">Apple</a>, and <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/accessories/">Accessories</a>.</p><p>What do you think? <strong><a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/07/07/how-apple-tests-cases/#comments">Discuss "Apple launches new webpage to detail how it tests accessories sold in its retail&nbsp;stores" with our community.</a></strong></p>

Banks in the U.K. Gearing Up for Apple Pay Launch as Sant...

Posted By x-bot in iDevice News
Apple Pay in the United Kingdom has yet to officially launch, but some banks are preparing for the upcoming release of the payments service and have begun allowing customers to register their cards for use with Apple Pay. <br/> <br/> Several Santander customers <a href="http://forums.macrum...173/page-11">onthe <em>MacRumors</em> forums</a> have been able to successfully add their cards to Passbook for use with Apple Pay, making the cards available on both their iPhones and their Apple Watches. <br/> <br/> <img src="http://cdn.macrumors.com/article-new/2015/07/santanderapplepay.jpg" alt="santanderapplepay" width="600" height="561" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-456603" /> <br/> Customers registering their cards are also receiving <a href="http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ios-8-4-and-apple-pay-in-the-uk.1896173/page-11#post-21558607">confirmation emails</a> from Santander, informing them that they're now able to use Apple Pay. As of the time of writing, customers have not yet tested the Apple Pay service at a location that accepts Apple Pay. One customer <a href="http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ios-8-4-and-apple-pay-in-the-uk.1896173/page-11#post-21558541">was told</a> the bank's system is not live and that customers who were able to mistakenly register early would be de-registered, so it is not clear if the registered cards will be able to be used to make purchases. <br/> <br/> <img src="http://cdn.macrumors.com/article-new/2015/07/applepayavailablesantander.jpg" alt="applepayavailablesantander" width="700" height="399" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-456604" /> <br/> Activating a Santander card with Apple Pay at this time requires U.K. users to set their region to U.S., add a card, and change their region back to U.K., at which point the card remains available in Passbook. It's clearly a workaround, but a sign that banks are preparing to accept Apple Pay in the near future. <br/> <br/> Other banks, like MBNA and Nationwide, are giving error messages like "Contact Card Issuer" and "Your Issuer Does Not Yet Offer Support." <br/> <br/> It is not clear exactly when Apple Pay will become officially available in the United Kingdom, but during its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple said the payments service <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2015/06/08/apple-pay-uk-support/">would launch in July</a>. Recently released employee training <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/07/04/apple-pay-expected-to-go-live-in-the-u-k-on-july-14th/">documents</a> have suggested the launch could come next week, on Tuesday, July 14. 250,000 merchants are expected to support Apple Pay in the U.K. when it is released.<br clear='all'/><br/><br/><a href="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/rc/1/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/rc/2/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/rc/3/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/a2.htm"><img src="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/a2.img" border="0"/></a><br/><a href="http://adchoice.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/ach.htm"><img src="http://adchoice.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/ach.img" border="0"/></a><img width="1" height="1" src="http://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/a2t.img" border="0"/><img width="1" height="1" src="http://pi2.feedsportal.com/r/233194368586/u/49/f/648326/c/35070/s/47ea680c/sc/28/a2t2.img" border="0"/><img width='1' height='1' src='http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/35070/f/648326/s/47ea680c/sc/28/mf.gif' border='0'/><div class="feedflare">

The HomeKit-compatible version of the Ecobee 3 smart thermostat, officially announced last month, goes on sale in U.S. Apple Stores today, reports The Verge. Apple has sold the original version since November of last year. The HomeKit-enabled model allows the thermostat to be controlled by Siri.

While Apple’s online store listing has not yet been updated to mention HomeKit-compatibility, it’s likely that the new version will ship from there too.

HomeKit was officially documented by Apple last month, the company confirming our report that the Apple TV would act as the gateway device. The support page has since been updated with a full list of Siri commands.

Developer T-3 has looked at dating app Tinder, which has people swiping left or right to choose potential connections, and thought, “That seems like a lot of work.” Its solution:<span class="ellipsis">…</span><div class="read-more"><a href="http://www.cultofmac...snappier/">Readmore ›</a></div><br clear='all'/><br/><br/><a href="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194377915/u/3/f/606249/c/33797/s/47ebc829/sc/15/rc/1/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194377915/u/3/f/606249/c/33797/s/47ebc829/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194377915/u/3/f/606249/c/33797/s/47ebc829/sc/15/rc/2/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194377915/u/3/f/606249/c/33797/s/47ebc829/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194377915/u/3/f/606249/c/33797/s/47ebc829/sc/15/rc/3/rc.htm" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194377915/u/3/f/606249/c/33797/s/47ebc829/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img" border="0"/></a><br/><br/><a href="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194377915/u/3/f/606249/c/33797/s/47ebc829/sc/15/a2.htm"><img src="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194377915/u/3/f/606249/c/33797/s/47ebc829/sc/15/a2.img" border="0"/></a><img width="1" height="1" src="http://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194377915/u/3/f/606249/c/33797/s/47ebc829/sc/15/a2t.img" border="0"/><img width='1' height='1' src='http://cultofmac.com.feedsportal.com/c/33797/f/606249/s/47ebc829/sc/15/mf.gif' border='0'/>

Withings' Activité and Activité Pop Updated With Swim...

Withings' Activité and Activité Pop are two of only a handful of activity trackers on the market that are entirely waterproof, and as of today, the two devices are able to be used to track swimming. Swim detection is a feature that Withings has long promised and will be a welcome addition for customers who bought the activity trackers to track their swim movements.

We appreciate your patience. We've heard your requests. And we're OVERJOYED to announce swim tracking is here. pic.twitter.com/Mok3wr1o8m— Withings (@Withings) July 7, 2015

Following today's firmware update, Activité fitness trackers will be able to automatically detect swim motions, recording a swimming session as a workout as the device does for other activities like running. Activity and workout information is then available for viewing within the accompanying Withings Health Mate app.

Activité Pop automatically recognizes swim. Just put it on, dive in and the watch will log your full session and record calories burned.

Both of the Withings activity trackers are water resistant down to 50 meters, or 164 feet, a feature that many of the popular activity trackers on the market cannot match.

Even Apple's own Apple Watch is not rated for swimming, but several people have opted to test the waterproofing of the device and have found that it does seem to be able to be used in the water with no consequence. Still, Apple does not recommend that it be used when swimming or showering, unlike the Activité, which can be used reliably in both situations.

Withings' Activité and Activité Pop can be purchased from the Withings website for $450 and $149.95, respectively.
