Today also represents Apple's 39th anniversary, with their partnership having officially been founded on this day in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne.

As has become tradition, a number of today's pranks have focused on Apple and tech, and here are a few of the more interesting ones to surface so far today. Keep in mind that some hoaxes may be mildly NSFW, so turning down your volume or watching later may be best if you are at work or in a public space.

iFaxit

Repair your Apple products using iFixit's repair manuals, now sent through fax.

HiRise Toast for iMac

Twelve South announced the HiRise Toast, an iMac stand that doubles as a toaster.

T-Mobile Pets Unleashed

T-Mobile introduced Pets Unleashed, a revolutionary new family plan that lets your pets get their paws on the hottest smartphones and stream the latest animal-related content without using up your data. iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writ...

<iframe class='youtube-player' type='text/html' width='704' height='426' src='http://www.youtube.c...de=transparent'frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'>

We first read about this quite some time ago. It was nothing out of the ordinary at the time: guy has his iPhone stolen, photos from the stolen phone show up in his iCloud account, social media employed to try to track down the person using the phone. But Matt Stopera’s story ended up far from ordinary.

He’s blogged the whole story in great detail on <a href="http://www.buzzfeed....zfeed,but here are the edited highlights …

A lot of the photos that show up featured a guy and an orange tree.

<img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372390" src="https://9to5mac.file...16-1.png?w=704"alt="enhanced-22677-1427588916-1" />

Like, seriously, a lot of photos of him and his tree – somewhere in China.

<img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372391" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/2.png?w=704"alt="2" />

Stopera posted the story to Buzzfeed and within hours someone translated the piece into Chinese and posted it on Weibo, the local equivalent of Twitter. The guy got termed Brother Orange, and people in China started trying to track him down.

<img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372392" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/3.png?w=704"alt="3" />

He ended up as the number one trending topic on Weibo.

<img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372393" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/4.png?w=704"alt="4" />

Brother Orange was identified – he didn’t steal the phone, but bought it secondhand in good faith. The two of them started chatting, eventually daily. Weibo described it as a romance. Eventually, Stopera suggested he fly to China for the two of them to meet up.

<img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372395" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/5.png?w=704"alt="5" />

Stopera was recognized on the plane by a ‘fan’ and started to realize he may really be famous there. He arrived at the airport to a huge crowd, and cameras.

<img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372397" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/6.jpg?w=704"alt="6" />

There were cameras wherever they went.

<img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372398" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/7.jpg?w=704"alt="7" />

People everywhere kept giving him phones. There was even a press conference.

<img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372399" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/8.jpg?w=704"alt="8" />

He doesn’t seem quite sure what it’s for, but thinks he went on to do some product endorsements.

<img title="iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372400" src="https://9to5mac.file...04/9.png?w=704"alt="9" />

Followed by a Weibo press conference, a tour of Beijing, a full-on bromance and now a forthcoming documentary. Crazy stuff … all because of the iPhone.

Filed under: General,iOS Devices Tagged: Brother Orange, china, icloud, iPhone, Matt Stopera, Stolen iPhone, Stolen iPhone China
Check out 9to5Mac for more breaking coverage of iOS Devices, iPhone, and icloud.

What do you think? Discuss "iPhone stolen in Manhattan a year ago leads Buzzfeed writer to find fame in China (Video)" with our community.

In many ways, my work is old school: unlike myother half, I work in an archive and write about the past. You might call my professional aesthetic “19th century schoolhouse.” Or at most “1920s Paris bookshop.” In other words, Pad&Quill. So when the Minnesota-based makers of the luxurious, leather notebook-style iPhone wallet case sent a new top-shelf work bag to our house, I claimed it. Over the past month I’ve been filling it with my MacBook, iPad, iPhone, papers, pens and books. Voilà the Attaché…

<a href="http://rss.buysellad...0&c=1015396699"target="_blank">

The Attaché bag follows the classic standards of its namesake case: it’s boxy, with plenty of space for documents and laptops. The sturdy leather keeps my files from crumpling and my computer from getting dinged — without the bulky (unsightly) padding you usually find in a laptop case.

<imgtitle="Review: Pad & Quill's Attaché is timeless, will stand the test of time (Discount+Giveaway)" class=" size-full wp-image-367507 aligncenter" src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/image07.jpg?w=704&h=529" alt="image07" width="704" height="529" />

While the exterior is a nod to the past, the interior reminds me that we live in the twenty-first century. The two compartments I use for my wallet and phone are lined in a bright orange soft suede. A free de-dust-ification every time I use it. Open the zipper pouch and it’s more orange:

<imgtitle="Review: Pad & Quill's Attaché is timeless, will stand the test of time (Discount+Giveaway)" class=" size-full wp-image-367506 aligncenter" src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/image00.jpg?w=704&h=459" alt="image00" width="704" height="459" />

The only part of the bag I haven’t found useful are the top straps of the interior pouches. This is because I’m impatient. The layout keeps me organized, but I can’t be bothered to tuck in the contents of those pouches. Instead, I’ve been sticking my lipgloss into the strap loop. The Attaché is fun for a boy or a girl. :)

<imgtitle="Review: Pad & Quill's Attaché is timeless, will stand the test of time (Discount+Giveaway)" class=" wp-image-367504 size-large aligncenter" src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/image09-e1427851111870.jpg?w=704&h=714" alt="image09" width="704" height="714" />

You can carry the bag by its attaché handle or wear it like I do, à la messenger using a detachable, adjustable strap. If you’re on the shorter side (I’m 5’4”), you might want to have a cobbler add a hole to the belt-like strap. In my case, it sits just perfectly on my hip on the shortest setting.

<imgtitle="Review: Pad & Quill's Attaché is timeless, will stand the test of time (Discount+Giveaway)" class=" size-full wp-image-367510 aligncenter" src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/image02.jpg?w=704&h=1053" alt="image02" width="704" height="1053" />

The hardware used to attach the shoulder strap on either side is extremely robust. This is one of the first things I checked on the Attaché, and here’s why: When I first started my grown-up job, I was carrying a similar, chintzier bag one morning and had the unfortunate experience of having the strap pivot break off while I was greeting my new colleagues. The strap snapped out and the bag dropped right to the floor. Was this former grad student fit for a 9-to-5? I wasn’t feeling it. Not so with the Attaché.

<img title="Review: Pad & Quill's Attaché is timeless, will stand the test of time (Discount+Giveaway)" class=" size-full wp-image-367512 aligncenter" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=528"alt="image05" width="704" height="528" />

Every detail — copper rivets, interior zipper, front button closure — is sturdy, functional, and beautiful.

<img title="Review: Pad & Quill's Attaché is timeless, will stand the test of time (Discount+Giveaway)" class=" size-full wp-image-367509 aligncenter" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=528"alt="image08" width="704" height="528" />

The Attaché bag is a welcome complement to the repertoire of Pad & Quill offerings, which began with ultra-slim wallets and sleek Moleskine-styled gadget cases and now include some of the best-looking tech bags you can find (eachbag is designed to satisfy). Everything they make is top shelf, with “leaves a good impression”-type quality.

<img title="Review: Pad & Quill's Attaché is timeless, will stand the test of time (Discount+Giveaway)" class=" size-full wp-image-367508 aligncenter" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=903"alt="image06" width="704" height="903" />

P.S. This bag is truly unisex. But in case you’re not convinced, here’s a picture of a dude wearing the black version. (It’s not a purse, it’s European!)

Here’s a pretty incredible story: The CEO of Apple touchscreen glass supplier Lens Technology has been named China’s richest woman, after demand for her company’s output saw shares climb 10 percent in a single day. Review: Kanex’s Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is a handy Mac...

Today, 01:26 PM

<img title="Review: Kanex's Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is a handy MacBook hub with middle-of-pack features, pricing" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372033" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="thunderbolt2expressdock-2" width="704" height="470" />

As I’ve saidbefore, Thunderbolt 2 docks are a really great idea for MacBook users. Before now, there were three major options: Belkin’s $300 Thunderbolt 2 Express HD Dock, Elgato’s $220 Thunderbolt 2 Dock (review), and CalDigit’s $226 Thunderbolt Station 2 (review). All three are designed for the same purpose — to connect a bunch of peripherals (including hard drives, a monitor, and audio cables) to your Mac with one Thunderbolt 2 cable — and they all have the same core peripheral ports, with small differences to set them apart from one another.

This month, Kanex is entering the fray with the <a href="http://www.amazon.co...ong>Thunderbolt2 Express Dock ($250), which looks a lot like Belkin’s dock but is closer in price to Elgato’s and CalDigit’s. Aluminum on the top and bottom with a black plastic core, it has a front-mounted USB 3.0 port with two more on the back, and comes bundled with a power adapter and 3.3-foot Thunderbolt cable. While it doesn’t stand out in any major way from its earlier rivals, it’s competently executed and attractively designed, with some modest feature tweaks that prospective buyers should know about…

<a href="http://rss.buysellad...970&c=27995679"target="_blank">

Aluminum and plastic design matches look of MacBooks

Eight total ports plus wall power input for computer-free charging

Includes Thunderbolt cable, normally sold for around $40

Highly similar performance to earlier rivals

Single audio port

<img title="Review: Kanex's Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is a handy MacBook hub with middle-of-pack features, pricing" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372037" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="thunderbolt2expressdock-6" width="704" height="470" />

The Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is roughly the same size as Belkin’s and Elgato’s docks, measuring 7.5″ wide by 3.5″ deep by 1.1″ tall. From the side, it looks like an extruded black pill with thick aluminum cladding on the top and bottom, plus four rubber feet to reduce slipping on a desk. Even though it’s technically a peripheral hub, a category known in the USB world for race-to-the-bottom pricing and sometimes quality, Kanex went out of its way to make its Thunderbolt dock feel substantial. Despite the light exterior materials, it has the sort of internal heft that you appreciate when you’re plugging and unplugging things on a desk, and doesn’t feel cheap in any way.

<img title="Review: Kanex's Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is a handy MacBook hub with middle-of-pack features, pricing" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372036" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="thunderbolt2expressdock-5" width="704" height="470" />

Functionally, Kanex’s dock is so similar to earlier competitors that it’s tempting to only focus on the differences. The Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock includes twin Thunderbolt 2 ports — one to connect to your Mac, the other to a monitor, hard drive, or other I/O accessory — plus one 2K/4K-ready HDMI port, one Gigabit Ethernet port, one 3.5mm microphone and headset port, a power-in port, and the three aforementioned USB 3.0 ports, one of which is on the front.

<img title="Review: Kanex's Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is a handy MacBook hub with middle-of-pack features, pricing" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372034" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="thunderbolt2expressdock-3" width="704" height="470" />

But there are a couple of differences. Most other Thunderbolt 2 docks have separate audio-out and audio-in ports, and some have an amplified audio output, but Kanex offers only one port: a standard headphone output that can switch to a microphone input as needed. Like Elgato and CalDigit, but unlike Belkin, Kanex continuously supplies power to the front USB 3.0 port, enabling it to recharge devices even when a computer’s not connected or powered off. However, the port promises only 1.5-Amp output, like its other rivals. That’s enough for full-speed iPhone recharging, but slower than the peak 2.1/2.4-Amp charging supported by iPads.

<img title="Review: Kanex's Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is a handy MacBook hub with middle-of-pack features, pricing" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372032" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="thunderbolt2expressdock-1" width="704" height="470" />

From a data throughput performance standpoint, there were no surprises when I tested the Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock. Like the other docks I’ve tested, I saw peak Thunderbolt 2 write and read speeds of 260 to 375MB/second, respectively, the former below the top 325MB/second write speeds I’ve seen with a directly-connected drive. The USB 3 drives I tested were the same when connected to the Express Dock as with a direct connection, running at around 105MB/second. I had no issues with HDMI output, audio, or device recharging during testing; everything worked as expected.

<img title="Review: Kanex's Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is a handy MacBook hub with middle-of-pack features, pricing" class="aligncenter wp-image-372071 size-large" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=379"alt="" width="704" height="379" />

Most of the time, the inclusion of a cable isn’t a big deal, but Thunderbolt cables are still extremely expensive — the reason CalDigit sells a cable-less version of its dock at a $40 discount. The cable Kanex includes with the Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock normallysells for $37 on its own, helping to explain the unit’s $250 asking price.

<img title="Review: Kanex's Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is a handy MacBook hub with middle-of-pack features, pricing" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-372035" src="https://9to5mac.file...pg?w=704&h=470"alt="thunderbolt2expressdock-4" width="704" height="470" />

If you’re considering the purchase of a Thunderbolt 2 dock, the choice between <a href="http://www.amazon.co...Kanex’s, <ahref="http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Thunderbolt-Resolution-Compatible-F4U085tt/dp/B00NAWCU7G?tag=trust925-20">Belkin’s, Elgato’s and CalDigit’s options might seem complicated, but it’s not. Assuming you’ll want a Thunderbolt cable in the package, Elgato’s $220 Thunderbolt 2 Dock just barely edges the other options out on pricing to performance, while CalDigit’s $226 Thunderbolt Station 2 can be had for $186 if you don’t need the cable. Both offer better audio capabilities than Kanex’s dock, and CalDigit’s upright, all-metal design with twin eSATA ports may appeal more to professional users. Why should someone choose Kanex’s Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock instead? If it goes on sale and the extra audio features aren’t important to you, it’s a good choice. But at $250, it’s a middle-of-the-pack option in pricing that doesn’t stand out much in performance.

Apple today officially launched a version of its Apple Store iPhone trade-in program for China, as noted on the individual store pages for China’s Apple Retail Stores.

As is the case in the United States and several other countries with Apple Stores, the program allowsa user to bring in an older iPhone model and trade in that device for gift card credit toward the purchase of a new iPhone; the program will most likely not allow a customer to trade in an iPhone toward the purchase of an Apple Watch. But as contrasted with the U.S., France, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and Italy, the new China program is limited to iPhones and iPads, and will not support non-Apple smartphones.

<a href="http://rss.buysellad...0&c=1510588738"target="_blank">

While Apple is partnered with BrightStar in many countries to recycle traded-in iPhones, Apple will sell thephones returned in China to Foxconn, which will in turn repair and flip the phones on secondary markets. In the United States, iPhone customers have numerous trade-in options, including Amazon’s ship-free, instant-quote trade-in system, and Gazelle’s aggressive cell phone trade-in program.

Filed under: AAPL Company Tagged: Angela Ahrendts, Apple Store, Apple watch, Brightstar, china, Foxconn, iPad, iPhone, IPhone 3G, IPhone 3GS, iphone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iphone 6 plus, Refurbished, retail stores, Reuse and Recycle, trade-in
Continue reading more about AAPL Company, iPhone, and iPad at 9to5Mac.

What do you think? Discuss "Apple launches iPhone and iPad trade-in program in China Apple Stores" with our community.
